First up, let’s talk about the rotation.
The good news is it seems that both Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer will be returning in July. These represent the best the Mets have to offer and, hopefully, they can put aside the injury bugs to their aging bodies for the remainder of this year.
The Tylor McGill injury is a team setback, but it does make one wonder if he should only come back as a middle reliever. I loved him when he first came up as a starter, but he seems to be becoming Corey Oswalt v2.0. That being said, convince him that he could be a great addition to the Mets pen and make him one of the middle relievers the team seems, at times, to desperately need.
For now, until our two past CYW winners come back, the rotation looks to set up as Bassett, Walker, Carrasco, Peterson, and Williams. Still talented, but not what we had expected this season.
Two of these guys will be removed in June and one I vote for is another pitcher I thought was going to be a killer starter when the Mets drafted him. David Peterson should also be sat down and told how much more valuable he will be as a member of the pen than a starter in Syracuse.
This would leave Walker, Carrasco, and Williams to fight it out for the last two slots. Me? I would not try and trade for another starter during the upcomng trading period and slot in Walker and Cookie. I would send Williams back to Syracuse to be added to their rotation and keep him arm stretched and I would concentrate any mid-season trades on an addition prime cut reliever with, at least, one more year under contract.
I’m going to change my ETA on Alvy.
Francisco Alvarez is embarrassing AA pitching. And, he’s only 20 years old.
I was a little pissed at him when he mouthed off to a reporter that he should be in the majors like other players on other teams his age. He was right, but this is not the kind of thing you talk to reporters about. I’m sure someone sat him down with his interpreter and told him in Spanish, to “stifle yourself, Edith”.
Still, this kid doesn’t need to be in the minors in 2023. I would send him away for summer ball to continue to work on his defensive game and start him for the Mets next season, either as the catcher or designated hitter.
This season? I think he could definitely help the team if they make the playoffs. There simply is no better player out there that is more talented than him in the chain.
If we are featuring Mets minor league players that are excelling this year, we need to talk about Brooklyn’s RF
Brandon McIlwain.
McIlwain is a 6-1, 205, rightfielder who can play all three outfield positions. He was drafted by the Marlins in 2019 (26th round), out of the University of California-Berkeley.
He chose to remain with Cal, went undrafted in the 5-round 2020 draft, and signed as an UDFA with the Mets to play for them beginning last season.
Last season, he showed promise for St. Lucie - 239-AB, .255 (but 89-K).
This year, for the Cyclones, his career looks to be taking off. Seasonally (thru Friday) so far, he is hitting .298 in 161-AB (45-K).
He was tagged early on as a below-average hitter; however, he may be proving those critics wrong.
His age alone warrants a bump.
The Mets held a first-of-a-kind meeting with the organization Advocates for Minor Leaguers and New York State Senator Jessica Ramos to discuss potentially improving pay and working conditions for minor leaguers in the Mets system.
A second meeting is planned for the near future.
Ramos had met with Mets minor leaguers and supplied Mets owner Steve Cohen a list of subjects to discuss. They were:
1. Pay weekly salaries all year round, without periods of free work.
2. Provide or cover the cost of in-season housing.
3. Provide or cover the cost of three meals per day during the season.
4. Provide multiple buses on road trips and sleeper buses on overnight road trips.
5. Assist players in shipping their cars to a new affiliate if reassigned and assist players without a car in getting to the field each day.
6. Cover the cost of offseason training.
7. Adjust salaries and per diems based on the cost of living in different affiliate home cities.
This is a first for any major league team.
I can speak volumes to the archaic way the Mets minor league players were paid and housed when I was in site covering the Savannah Sand Gnats. Ernest Dove can add to this that the current system hasn’t changed at all.

I guess the concern also is that if degrom does actually pitch will he be maybe a 5 inn guy? I still want Mets to wait until July 20 something to look around and see what's really needed.

To add to the Minors list, it seems like for a paltry sum of $20M spread across four cities, the clubs could either buy, fully rent, or build a hotel/Condo building for the players and coaches (and any other traveling staff) Fifty rooms should be plenty. In the off months, sub-let it to a local hockey team.
I will believe Jake can durably pitch when I see it.
Max, I think will be OK, if he doesn't rush things.
Megill? I think his ceiling is a # 2 starter, if he can stay healthy. He was hitting 98 early the other night.
I posted the Alvarez vs. McCann thing on Facebook, and got the usual cacophony of experts who thought that my suggesting that if McCann was owed no future money, the call up decision might be Alvarez. Got called stupid - I mean, why not? After all, I am pretty stupid. Why even suggest something so absurd?
What the armchair dummies don't realize is this: guys in baseball get old early many times. Catchers do, especially. McCann is now 32, not young for a catcher.
McCann since start of August 2021, is 33 for 175 (.188) with 7 doubles and 2 HRs. And that is not counting his 1 for 9, 7 Ks in AA rehab so far. Yep he is the clear choice - someone peeled off his Mission Impossible mask and realized it isn't McCann after all, it's Anthony Recker.
Alvarez? No way. Who wants a guy who can tear the cover off a baseball, raising his average 80 points in a month and hitting 10 homers in the past 3 weeks, when you can have .188 instead? Give me .188 or give me death, Patrick Henry probably would (not) have said - he was a revolutionary thinker.
Unlike others (not you, Mack - the knuckleheads), I like to ask these sorts of questions and not simply shrug and say he was too young.
Heck, Dwight Gooden was called up at 19. What, were they nuts? Man he should have been left in the minors until he was 22 to mature. I am not saying to call up Alvarez tomorrow. But Soto came up really fast at age 19, Gooden did too, and the great ones operate on a different timetable.
Alvarez has 3 passed balls and 4 errors this year. He is improving in all aspects. I'd say, if he stays hot, maybe we see him after the All Star break. Sept 1 the latest.
Mack, I hope Cohen steps up here on the minor league compensation issue.

You kinda lost me in your co?ents about the rotation, Mack. You said 2 guys will be removed in June, but while Max may return this month, Jake and Megill certainly won't, so only one (Peterson or Williams) may be bumped before July.
Then you said that Walker, Carrasco and Williams would fight it out for the last 2 spots. Seriously? I can't imagine Williams bumping either or Carrasco, barring injury or serious slump.
I agree with Williams going upstate to be a SP, though I hesitate necause he's our best bet to be a pen guy who can go more than 2 IP in a game.
I had thought Peterson might be useful as another LHRP, but his control problems (walks and HBPs) have swayed me. Now I feel that he'd be better suited to starting upstate.
Of course, in our current situation, both he and Williams are in the rotation, with several opportunities to again change my mind.

Mack, I just marvel at the stupidity of some facebook commenters, who lead with their "stupid" - I give it back to them with facts.
Just based on facts - no names - get to choose one:
Veteran guy who is hitting .188 in his last 175 at bats with 2 HRs, or a young guy hitting .350 over the past 5 weeks, and 10 HRs in the past 3 weeks in the high minors? Without names, I know who I want to give a try to.
Me? I don't think it is stupid at all to ask. I'm sure Cohen's exec team discusses this. ALvarez's torrid hitting, and McCann's hitting disappearance, forces that discussion.
Someone said veteran starters like Jake and Max want a strong veteran defensive catcher. My counter to that? I think Jake would disagree. If I was Jake, I sure would.
After all, he is the guy who started 64 games in his 2 Cy Young years and won just 21 of them, because of absolutely no offense. You add Alvarez to the current team's strong offense, and they then score 5 runs a start for Jake, and Jake pitched 2 years like that, he wins 41, not 21. And his Hall of Fame chances would be stronger.
There is a distinct chance that McCann has regressed into Anthony Recker. I hope he hasn't.
Look the Bravos are doing it with Travis who is all offense no defense or arm so are you telling me we can't fit Alvarez in even if it's just DH? J.D. is at 2-14-.260 so how much better does he have to be to better than that performance AND if he is "The Guy" like hopefully Soto or Acuna lets find out now because you add a bat to this lineup and we're even more dangerous and can focus on the mound. Gary, stop making so much sense. The Travis comparison is excellent. Again, I am not saying to promote Alvarez tomorrow to the Mets. But how about after Sunday to AAA? And if he continues on a tear, promote him after the All Star Break? If not, no rush, keep him in the minors.

Williams has been excellent. But beating out Carrasco or Walker for the last rotation spot? Seriously?
If he doesn't, something is SERIOUSLY wrong, and we're in big trouble unless we add someone in July.
