MLB has nifty spring stats, which help evaluate a roster's performance.
But it gives a nice glimpse of how the pitching horse race is shaping up.
We already know that Scherzer, Verlander, Senga, Diaz, Ottavino, Robertson, and Raley are absolute certainties to be part of the team going north, absent injury. That's 7.
Quintana (several months) and de Oca (probably a month) are the injured who are out of the opening day running. Rest up, fellas.
One other "going north" lock is Carrasco, unless he keeps getting shelled. Assume he comes around, and that's 8 locks, 5 spots left.
Out of the remainder, reducing the list to 5 more guys will be tough.
Peterson or Megill should grab Quintana's 5th spot in the rotation Both are excellent and both deserve to go north. I do not ascribe to sending a clear major leaguer, and a no-doubt talent, to the minors to keep them “stretched out”. If it is my team, NO DOUBT both are going north.
That would leave just 3 spots.
Does Nogosek go north because he is out of options? Not the way he's pitching. No, my choices right now are John Curtiss, Sam Coonrod, and Drew Smith, although the latter probably still has options, so it could be Tommy Hunter instead.
Anyway, the stats for all “possibles” except Joey Lucchesi - my bad - are shown below (Joey has pitched his way our of contention so far).
Tables from MLB are sometimes troublesome for me to copy over into a table nicely and neatly - at least for me.
So here is the messy table (stats thru Tuesday). My codes in the right hand column are predicated on whether a guy deserves to go north, if there was unlimited opening day roster room (which there isn't); Y = yes, N = no, S= so-so spring performance, not good enough to make the roster. RC means roster spot most likely secure, but the fellow is pitching crappy.

Coonrod will be out
Today is a depressing day to be a Met fan.
Catastrophic for this year and next as we all know theres no guarantee he's fully back next year it's just plain awful.
No Time For Wine.
We have to go with the cards dealt. It's the law of even baseball.
I said a week ago that there could be considerable advantages for the Mets to consider using J. Butto and Denyi Reyes more. I meant it.
Why you say?
Because right now, the league does not know these two pitchers. Yes, this would have been a great showcase period for "The Orca". True, no doubt. But he is out IR for a month or so. He will take the closer role along with another Met reliever once he gets back.
So the Mets need to go to a viable alternative such as J. Butto and Denyi Reyes. They have the stuff. They have seen some ST success. Then add in Stephen Nogosek, Drew Smith, and John "Tony" Curtis. There's five.
Thank goodness to the Mets brass for making this RP roster as deep and effective as they did for the 2023 season. We see how important that was now. But do not give up hope here with these two injuries to "The Orca" and Edwin Diaz. We will see Diaz come 2024.
For these are the times for good men to step forward and make a considerable name for themselves. A window. And I for one think that is precisely what we will see happen as we enter the start of the 2023 season. All is not lost!
Baseball is not played by Rhodes scholars.
2023 is kaput.
Edwin turned an 88 win team last year into a 100 win team.
Steve Nogosek will close, all is well.
Thanks for share this information its really informative for all you are the best writer for all.
