Did I leave anyone out? Mainstay Marte, perhaps?

Well…

I did write this a few weeks ago.

In the pre-patellar ERA.

Let me put it this way:

Edwin Diaz in 2022:

9 runs in 62 innings, 32 of 35 in saves. Brilliant.

Rest of pen?

230 runs in 500 innings, 9 of 21 in saves.  Bad.

Mets Doomed?

Yep. Or, if not doomed, not dominant. Not without the fella with a damaged patellar as a pen propeller to make the pen stellar.

One, question, thinking about “no Diaz”, if I may…

When does spring training 2024 start?

DJ Stewart, Tommie Pham, and Darin Ruf:

The 29 year old Stewart has had an undistinguished MLB career so far. But he is prime time 29. He is 10 for 26, 7 walks, 5 XBHs, 11 RBIs. Hitting like a 29 year old should. Wow.

Pham and Ruf? A combined 72 years old, and the two aging veterans are each playing like they are 72.  The 2 combined are a sickening 9 for 62, no HRs, 3 RBIs, 20 Ks. Each has a double, though.

Give me DJ, or give me Dearth.

Meanwhile, castoffs JD Davis and Michael Conforto are 23 for 75 with 5 HRs with the Giants. Hitters become giants when they play with the Giants, one might say. Mets hitters like Pham and Ruf become Mutts.

Tim LoCastro has had a solid spring and 6 steals in as many attempts. Maybe the speedster can steal a roster spot. You can only run 25 MPH in Queens or you’ll get a camera ticket, Tim. Use WAZE when you speed.

Speaking of speed, I see that speedy, fanny Omar De Los Santos has gotten up 5 times, fanned 3 times, and stolen 2 bases. Last year in A ball, in 111 games, he fanned a whopping 150 times and stole a whopping 70 bases. Had he fanned just 50 times, maybe he would have stolen 170 bases, who knows.

20 lower Mets minor leaguers (unnamed and unashamed here) in spring games have combined for 35 at bats and produced exactly (wait, let me count) no hits, while walking 3 times. How to make an instant impression. Reminds me a bit of that Harvey Haddix game where the first 12 innings, 36 straight guys made outs against Harvey without so much as a hit. Maybe Matt Harvey would have done that too, had he not gotten injured early and often.

A booming .382/.400/.706? Who dat??

Tomas Nido, who else? As I always say (well, no, this is the first time I am saying it), the man is both an offensive beast and a veritable hitting machine. Makes me glad we didn’t sign JT Realmuto.

Someone is 1 for 15? Yes. Living up to his rep as an all D, no O catcher, Martin Perez eschews violent contact. No walks, either. I personally like to go for walks, but he apparently does not. The Mets may tell him to take a walk.

Maybe, besides Perez, some of the catchers have also gone on a hitting strike, as high minors catchers Alvarez, Senger, Parada and Meyer are a combined 6 for 48. Yes, Parada is high minors, even if not just yet.

Personally, I want to see Alvarez and Parada both receive offensive player of the month awards in their respective leagues this year.

Lastly, Alex Ramirez has gotten into a lot of (13) games, with a lot of (20) at bats and 4 hits. That is a lot of playing time for the youngster, and I bet he is vying to go north with the Mets a year from now in March 2024. Just needs another 500 MILB PAs in 2023 to get there, is how I see it.

Really lastly, I know you’ve been wanting to see how Trevor May is doing with Oakland.  9 Ks in 4.2 IP, 5 earned runs, no torn patellars.

I guess that patellar thing has me bummed. How about you?

I like Licastro

Also, look forward to A-Ram playing AA

Bullpen wise, need a star to rise.

My prediction; Drew Smith

I like Drew a lot. Golden opportunity if he stays healthy, which was a 2022 issue.

ST stats don’t matter much to me. How many Double A pitchers are there out there. ST is about getting ready for the season. LikewiseW-L records don’t mean much.

There really are a lot of Mets that have potential to stand out in 2023. I wonder who the surprise will be? Will it be one of the young guys? Will it be someone with a down year in 2022 that revitalizes their game?

If spring stats don’t excite you, skip along. Others find the perspectives interesting. There is a lot of that “who cares” attitude among Facebookers. When I see it, I always remind them there are readers who do care.

Paul, I still think we’ll get a lot of positives out of Vientos, Mauricio, Baty, and Alvarez this season, when all is said and done. Bryce, too, if and when he heals up.

TB:

Dos Cosas Por Favor.

uno:
If Tomas Nido keeps hitting the way that he has all ST, he is your OCHO All Star for '23. I like this Tomas Nido a lot now at the plate and his catching is always superlative. And yes, I might consider trading Francisco Alvarez soon (like for that perfect lefty late inning reliever guy) with Tomas Nido and Kevin Parada already in the house.

Bueno Victorie.

dos:

Bednar is good, but with Hunter and other solid righty relievers do we really need him? Probably not. What the Mets really maybe do need more, is a really good lefty late inning reliever instead. Simple here. Get me John Franco on the line. Franco is sixty now, but I'd bet you he still has it!

Cannot wait to see Mike Vasil go today. There will be a natural reaction by mgt. and Mets fans to want to convert this big man to relief, but forgetaboutit. The man is a stud starter waiting to happen here for this NYM team. Trust me here, I know these things.

Alvarez has a poor ST and suddenly he’s trade bait! He needs 30-60-90 triple A games behind the plate. He’ll be up at about HR #10.

Tom Brennan said...

Woodrow, I am not trading Alvarez. He could have a blistering April. He can really hear up suddenly.
