UPDATED RESEARCH - 2023 Draft Prospect - SS - Marcus Brown

Marcus Brown

SS Oklahoma State

2-22-23 - Opening Weekend -

Marcus Brown, SS, Oklahoma State– Brown came into his own as a sophomore at OSU last spring, hitting .316/.378/.441 with 15 doubles as a catalyst for the Cowboys. He then took his lumps last summer in the Cape, hitting .236 with 31 strikeouts against 10 walks. He started the 2023 season 1-for-9 with four strikeouts at the Showdown.

At 5-foot-11, 190 pounds he’s a strong, quick-twitch athlete with decent bat speed, but his swing has some length, and he continues to be a bit pull-happy in our looks. Brown is a good runner who is aggressive on the basepaths, and he has adequate range and an average arm with a quick release that plays at shortstop at this level, though he likely profiles better at second base in pro ball.

At this point, I see Brown as a very solid college player, yet one who projects as a mid-to-later Day Two pick instead of the one who has received Day One hype elsewhere this preseason.

Marcus Brown

Oklahoma State

Brown is buoyed by exceptional tools on the dirt. He's a surefire shortstop at the next level with a plus tools and a wicked-quick release. Brown has the internal clock, athleticism and hands to stick at the position. His bat lags behind the glove a bit, though he's showcased solid bat-to-ball skills, albiet lacking impact.

We've got him a future average, potentially a solid average hitter with below average game power. He should handle the low-minors with ease as he's done well against heat and lackluster spin. Brown has twitch at the plate and can turn on a ball.

47. Marcus Brown, SS, Oklahoma State – Brown is as defense first shortstop who committed zero errors in 135 chances on the Cape over the summer.  He did not put up great numbers at the plate on the Cape, but he hit over .400 in the Appy League the summer before and has hit .323 in his two seasons at Oklahoma State.

Unfortunately, the Cape numbers are probably most realistic in his future potential as his hips open early at the plate and he chases far too many balls out of the zone. He does have good bat speed so there is some pop and hope the contact rate can improve, but the defense is really the calling card here.
