Binghamton Rumble Ponies to be sold

In a surprise announcement yesterday, the Binghamton Rumble Ponies announced that current owner David Sobotka has agreed to sell the team to Diamond Baseball Holdings (DBH). Binghamton is currently the New York Mets' AA affiliate and has been home to the Mets' AA entry for over 30 years.

Sobotka, who purchased the team in late 2021, has made a very positive impact on the club in just a few years.  He has made significant investment in the club and its facilities, and has partnered with local and state representatives to use government funding as a force multiplier to his investments.

Personally, I will miss David as an owner.  He had a hands-on approach to managing this franchise, which has created a very tight knit team that cares very much about the future of Binghamton baseball.  Sobotka was always at the ballpark, and rather than sit in a pampered executive box, he was more likely to be seen bartending on the party deck in right field or chatting with fans between innings.

Sobotka and local political leaders have assured the community that a primary condition of the sale was that the club would remain in Binghamton as an affiliate of the Mets.

The full announcement is available on the Binghamton Rumble Ponies' site here.

Good for the City of Binghamton and its local fans. Bad if you don't like a cold first 3-4 weeks to a season
