Tom Brennan: It’s Early, But…

Mets Granted Clemency By Inclement Weather

You know the way that you could always count on the Pittsburgh Pirates to be an anemic hitting team that the Mets could outscore, even while the Mets could outscore very few other teams?

Well, 2024 is shaping up to be a little different, shall we say.

Pittsburgh in spring training scored 146 runs, as compared to the Mets’ 121 runs. Nearly a run game more for the Buccos over the 30 games each played.

Fast-forward to the regular season, and we see that the Mets have scored eight runs in four games, an average of two runs per game.

If the Mets score 31 runs in their next game, they’ll have equaled the 39 runs Pittsburgh has scored in their first five games, while outhitting the Mets by .302 to .188.

So, you see, you just can’t count on the old givens any longer, can you?

Meanwhile, those eight runs the Mets have scored so far this year?

Three teams, including Pittsburgh, are averaging eight runs - per game.

Have a nice day, and if the Mets are not scoring enough runs for you, you can compensate a little bit by running to the store several times, or simply running to the fridge a lot.

Before I go, something remarkable happened last night. Neither the 0-4 Mets nor 1-2 Syracuse lost. The rain in both locations sort of took care of that. When the rain comes, they run and hide their head.

I’m moving to Pittsburgh. I want to be in on the resurgence. I don’t know, Atlanta has nice weather most of the year. Maybe there. I’d moved to Baltimore, except without a bridge, it would be hard to get around. Maybe I just live near Camden yards and watch a great young team develop. Decisions, decisions, what to do?

Ah Pittsburgh, my favorite team after the Bums left Brooklyn.

When does the REAL season start? Do Mets know?

Tom Brennan said...

Ernest, the season probably starts when the calendar hits April 11, the date of the 1962 Mets’ first game. The first win, like in 1962, might have to wait until April 23, though…that’s when Jay Hook and the 0-9 Mets handily beat the 10-0 Pittsburgh Pirates.

This is the Pitts. We need to score more. How to unfreeze the offense? Maybe that upcoming trip to Atlanta? Unlikely.

Paul, JD Martinez May be activated on Sunday. He should, rather than showing up for his first game in Atlanta.

Ronel throws a no hitter, Harper hits 3 HR yesterday. Can we do that this week, too?

In the “annually recurring theme” department, the Yankees return home this weekend, to weather that shows no rain from Friday thru next Wednesday. The Mets have storm clouds hanging over their heads all too often.

Is great to see that these NEW Mets are just like the old Mets. Can't hit, can't run, can't field and more often than not, can't pitch. They are as exciting as the weather these days.

Viper, agreed, and I am shocked the Mets haven’t called tonight’s game yet. Weather tonight forecast to be a lot worse than last night.

They did cancel, minutes after you shamed them into it.
Good job!!

Double header in sunny lovely 48 degree weather tomorrow.

The Who said it best "new boss same as the old boss" until proven otherwise. Maybe move the fences in like 30 feet. It will at least be exciting because there's nothing worse than boring. Someone posted on facebook I think that they saw three 18 wheelers at Citi unloading wood for the firesale and more are coming.

Tom,
Teheran has been reported to have signed with the Mets. Not sure how much he has left, but I guess we will see.
