Three B-Mets Hurlers Combine on 2-0 Shutout of Winless Erie

Binghamton held Erie to just three hits Tuesday night at NYSEG Stadium en route to its first shutout win of the season 2-0. Righty Edgar Ramirez notched the win with three innings of one-hit ball and was followed up by fellow right-hander John Lujan who secured the save with 1.1 innings of perfect work.

The B-Mets and SeaWolves matched scoreless frames up until the fifth inning when Binghamton broke through. Jose Coronado sliced a double down the right field line off Erie starter Jon Kibler turning the lineup over to leadoff man Kirk Nieuwenhuis. Nieuwenhuis jumped on a fastball from Kibler, ripping it under the glove of first baseman Cesar Nicolas to plate Coronado from second.

Binghamton (3-3) took advantage of a SeaWolves error in the seventh to add their second and final run. Erie (0-6) reliever Jay Voss induced a lazy fly ball off the bat of Coronado into shallow center. Shortstop Cale Iorg and second baseman Justin Henry chased the fly into shallow center where centerfielder Wilkin Ramirez called off both men, but botched the catch allowing Coronado to reach. With Nieuwenhuis at the plate, the speedy B-Mets second baseman stole second to get into scoring position. Righty Luis Marte was then summoned from the SeaWolves pen and dispatched Luis Hernandez, who flied out to left. After walking Nick Evans, Marte surrendered an RBI ground-rule double to Lucas Duda putting Binghamton in command 2-0.

Ramirez made it stand up. At one point, the tall righty retired nine straight hitters before walking Deik Scram in the eighth, which resulted in his exit from the game. Lujan spelled him and promptly struck out the tying run, Santo De Leon, to end the eighth. Lujan then worked a 1-2-3 ninth to secure his first save of the season and the B-Mets second straight win over Erie.

Binghamton starter Eric Niesen battled his command for 4.2 innings, walking five in the game. However, the lefty, who was a non-roster invitee to Major League Spring Training, allowed just two hits and struck out five to segue to the bullpen.

Kibler was hung with the loss despite allowing only one run on seven hits over six innings of work. The lefty is now 0-2 on the season and has allowed just two earned runs in 11 innings.

Nieuwenhuis was one of three B-Mets with two hits in the contest. Binghamton’s centerfielder went 2-5 with an RBI to break a 1-9 slump. Marshall Hubbard also managed a two-hit day, which included a pair of doubles to give him four on the season. Coronado scored both of the team’s runs and roped two hits, one being a double. He has recorded two hits in three of the five games he has appeared in thus far in 2010.
