USF got a little intrigue in the final round of this week's major-league baseball draft Wednesday, as Bobby Eveld, the 6-foot-5 Jesuit quarterback pledged to walk on with the Bulls this fall, was drafted as a catcher in the 50th round by the New York Mets.
Eveld, who helped the Tigers reach the state championship game in baseball, worked out for the Mets in Port St. Lucie, but his father Mark said Wednesday that his son expects to start classes at USF in two weeks.
"Right now, he is still honoring his commitment to USF football," his father said. "We've discussed it with the Mets, and we had talked with USF about it. He's going to give it his best shot (with the Bulls)."
Eveld, who will sit down with Mets officials next week, isn't likely to command any substantial signing bonus after being selected in the final round of the draft, so the decision is likely to come down to which experience he wants more -- minor-league baseball or college football. Eveld would be one of four quarterbacks on USF's roster this fall, with starter B.J. Daniels, freshman Jamius Gunsby as the top backup and redshirt freshman walk-on Ryan Eppes also back from last season.
