Coultas played college ball at the University of California-Davis, where his 3 year career was marred by injuries. He injured his right hand during the 2003 Division II National Playoffs and in 2004 broke a bone in the same hand. Both injuries ended his season.
Actually, Coutas was first drafted by the Cubs in the 13th round of the 2003 draft; however he chose to go back to school for his junior year (where he broke his hand). Coultas was drafted by the Mets in the 6th round (164th overall) of the 2004 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of California-Davis. His hometown is Ventura, California. On June 29, 2004, he signed for a $135,000 bonus. Coultas put up some impressive numbers in 2005 at H-Town (304 at bats - .289/.338.447); however, 2006 was a major disappointment at both Hagerstown (.232/.277/.284) and especially, St. Lucie (144 at bats .146/.183/.167).
In 2007, Coultas played a little for Binghamton (.182/.207/.218 in 55 at bats), but ended the season back at St. Lucie (.257/.305/.377 in 183 at bats).
Ryan stayed at St. Lucie in 2008, going 1-5, 4.17 in 47 relief appearances.
From the B-Mets: 2008: In first full season as a reliever, Coultas appeared in 47 games with St. Lucie (High-A)...His best month was July, surrendering just 2 runs over 11.1 innings in 8 appearances (1.59 ERA)...He finished the season with three straight scoreless outings.
2007: Saw limited time with St. Lucie (High-A) and Binghamton (AA) as a utility player playing every infield position, with exception of catcher, and the outfield...Hit .257 with 3 HR and 27 RBI for St. Lucie. 2006: Split year between St. Lucie (High-A) and Hagerstown (Low-A)
as a second baseman primarily...Hit .146 in 50 games for St. Lucie and .232 in 26 contests with Hagerstown.
2005: Played in a career-high 89 games for Hagerstown (Low-A) as a middle infielder...Batted a career-high .289 with 22 2B, 6 HR and 36 RBI. 2004: Spent season with Brooklyn (SS-A) batting .252 in 44 G with Cyclones.
Personal: Drafted in the sixth round by the Mets in 2004 out of UCDavis...Rated as Baseball America’s No.1 Division II prospect in 2002… hitting .379 as a redshirt freshman...Played in the prestigious Cape Cod League for Yarmouth-Dennis in 2002.
The Mets gave Ryan every opportunity to make it in baseball, but injuies simply caught up. Youcan't ask more from an infielder to go 4-3, 2.78, in 11-starts, but that was 2009 and he hasn't played since.
