Mets Win a Thriller 5-4

METS WIN!!!

In today's match up against the Giants (7-7), the Mets (8-6) walked off in the most improbable style. Today's game was not pretty, but the team with the fewer mistakes won. Pelfrey was outstanding, didn't think I was going to say that, did ya? He had good control of his fastball, and was only scratched for a run in the third to the Panda, Pablo Sandoval. Ryan Vogelsong matched Pelfrey inning for inning, it seemed like the Mets weren't able to track Vogelsong's fastball very much because Vogelsong had a career high eight strikeouts. However, the Mets improved their situational hitting when Ruben Tejada gave the Mets the lead in the seventh inning with a two run RBI double. See what a little muscle does for you Ruby Tuesday!, Tejada leads the National League with seven doubles. There was a little debate on whether Pelfrey should've gone the distance, but Terry Collins felt he wanted to leave Pelfrey leaving good with eight innings of one run ball. Frank Francisco continued to disappoint today, giving up a run on a walk and two hits. Collins had enough and decided to take his closer out and put in Byrdak and Rauch. Byrdak struck out the only batter he faced, and the inning . Brydak would then be removed and replaced by Jon Rauch. Rauch threw a great pitch to Brandon Belt, getting him to pop up between Shortstop and Centerfield. The only problem was- NEITHER Tejada NOR Nieuwenhuis CAUGHT THE BALL! Thanks to that play that reminded all Mets fan about Luis Castillo missed catch against the Yankees, the Giants tied the game at 3!
The Mets were now up to bat in the ninth inning against former Florida Marlin and Mets killer Clay Hensley. Lucas Duda led of the inning with a clean single, getting on base for the third time this game. He would be replaced shortly after for pinch runner Scott Hairston. Josh Thole then bunted Duda over to second base. Ruben Tejada would work out a well deserved walk to get Hensley out of the game. Jeremy Affeldt would come in to the game to face pinch hitter Justin Turner. Turner would hit the ball to shortstop Emanuel Burriss for what looked like an inning ending double play. But Giants second baseman Aubrey Huff, yes Aubrey Huff, wasn`t covering the second base bag in his first pro-inning at second base in his 14 year big league career. Turner was safe, Hairston was safe, and Tejada was safe. It was now bases loaded for Kirk Nieuwenhuis with only one out. Kirk would hit it to firstbase for what looked like another inning ending double play. Brandon belt threw Hairston out at home and Posey was trying to throw out Kirk. Thanks to a very smart baseball move by Scott Hariston (sliding hard at the plate), Posey overthrew the ball and Tejada scored to give the Mets the probable and improbable win.
The Mets absolutely had to win this one and did, ending their three game losing streak. Mets go back to work tomorrow afternoon at 1 pm ET sending out Dillon Gee against Giant`s ace Tim Lincecum.

In other Mets news....
Phillip Humber threw a perfect game for the Chicago White Sox tonight against the Seattle Mariners. Humber was the Mets third overall pick in 2004 MLB draft, just a pick after reigning AL Cy Young and MVP award winner Justin Verlander. Humber would be traded to the Minnesota Twins for Mets ace Johan Santana. Congratulations to you Phillip!
