Josh Rodriguez Named Eastern League Player of the Week
BINGHAMTON, NY –The Eastern League has named Binghamton Mets infielder Josh Rodriguez as the Player of the Week for the period of April 16th – 22nd. Rodriguez hit .500 (13-for-26) over seven games with two doubles, two home runs, seven runs scored, and seven RBI.
Rodriguez, signed as a minor league free agent by the Mets in March, is in his first season with the B-Mets and fifth in the Eastern League. The infielder, who has split time at second base, shortstop and third base, is on a six-game hitting streak, raising his average from .192 to .367 during the stretch. Over his last three games he has collected nine hits, capped by a four-hit performance against the Portland Sea Dogs on Sunday afternoon.
Originally drafted in the 2nd round in 2006 out of Rice University by the Cleveland Indians, Rodriguez made his Double-A debut with the Akron Aeros in 2008. He was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2010 Rule 5 Draft and made his Major League debut with the club in April 2011. After being returned to the Indians organization later in the month, he was traded back to the Pirates for cash considerations in June. The Mets signed him as a free agent following his release from the Pirates this past March.
Rodriguez is the second B-Met to receive Eastern League honors this season. Starter Greg Peavey was named the league’s Pitcher of the Week last week.
Rodriguez’s B-Mets (9-7) start a three-game series against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats Tuesday night at 6:35 PM. RHP Zack Wheeler takes the ball for Binghamton in search of his first win of the season. The Horizons Federal Credit Union pre-game show begins at 6:20 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
