Tony Plate - Mets Look to Improve at the 2019 Baseball Winter Meetings

The New York Mets look to Improve at the 2019 Baseball Winter Meetings which are being held at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront in San Diego, California. They want to add depth to both the starting rotation and bullpen plus they are looking for a back-up catcher.
The Mets should trade for Josh Hadar who is the best relief pitcher in baseball. It would be imperative for the Mets to attempt to swing a deal with the Brewers. He is only 25 and would have four years of team control left.
He would come at a steep price, but it would be worth it for the Mets since their bullpen was a major weakness in 2019. If a trade was made Hadar would be the closer and Diaz would be the setup guy. If Diaz regains his 2018 form, they would be a tough tandem. We’ll see what happens during the next couple of days
The Milwaukee Brewers are in win now mode and are still a World Series contender therefore in my opinion, General Manager David Stearns, who completely rebuilt the Brewers in three years with a $100 million payroll and came within a game of the 2018 World Series would not want prospects in return and would want current Major League players instead.
The Mets trade of acquiring Jake Marisnick from the Houston Astros before the meetings began for minor league pitcher Blake Taylor and outfielder Kennedy Corona was good.
Marisnick is the elite defender they needed in center-field and he is one of the best in the game. Another good move was re-signing Brad Brach who pitched well for the Mets in 2019 and he comes at a bargain price of $ 850,000
In other Mets news Tony DeFrancesco will join the staff as first base coach.

He managed the Mets’ Triple-A affiliate for the last two seasons and also interviewed for the managerial job before Beltran was hired.

In other baseball news the World Series Champion Washington Nationals re-signed Stephen Strasburg to a record seven-year $245-million deal.

What helped him earn that deal was his 2019 post season performance. Steven A.  Cohen, a minority investor in the Mets, is negotiating with the Wilpon family to purchase a controlling stake in the team.

Former Met Keon Broxton returned to the Brewers by signing a minor- league deal with an invitation to spring training.

The New York Yankees are looking to possibly re-sign both Brett Gardner and Dellin Betances, who was one of the game’s most successful relievers.

Didn't we trade for "the best reliever in baseball" this time last year?

I would love to trade for Hader but the price would be too high.

No, stay to adding free agents only this meeting and wait for the Year Of Cohen to start this time next season.

Great stuff as always Tony. In my opinion Josh Hader comes with baggage and the Mets do not handle bad public relations well. I don't see a fit especially if the cost of getting Hader is J.D. Davis.

Marisnick may be one of the best defensively...but offensively, he is quite weak. Hader would be a lefty mirror of Edwin Diaz....a super K, high HRs-allowed guy. Could be great, could have us pulling our hair out.

Only one reliever Mariano Rivera...everyone else has ups and downs.

Just saw this:

Expectations are that Cole will indeed go past the $300MM mark, per the New York Post’s Joel Sherman, who names nine years and $324MM as “not a bad over/under” for Cole’s next deal.

Between JDD, 4to, Nimmo, McNeil,Smith, and possibly Cespedes, the OF is full. I don't see room for Marisnick unless at least one of the above is injured or traded.

Some other move MUST be coming.

As I said in my article there is a possibility that Diaz will regain his form in 2018, also Treinen is currently available
