The New York Mets have been receiving calls from multiple teams
for Yoenis Cespedes. Nothing is imminent and his injuries are a major concern
and an obstacle to a trade.
It is unfortunate that the ankle injuries he suffered
at his ranch led to an amended contract that reduced both his 2019 and 2020
salaries to avoid a hearing in front of an arbitrator.
The Mets contend that
he was in violation of his contract for an activity on his ranch that caused
him the ankle fractures.
The reworked contract was huge due to the fact that
the Mets are only 1.7 million dollars away from the luxury tax line. It helped
the team sign free agents Rick Porcello and Michael Wacha
General Manager Brodie Van Wagenen has been uncertain about
Cespedes potential return for next season. He indicated that Cespedes has started
a running program. He is also taking batting practice in Port St. Lucie.
Since he
has been out for quite some time, He is vowing a return to form and is
determined to play over 140 games and hit a good amount of home runs which
remains to be seen.
Teams
are looking to acquire Cespedes along with another current Met player or prospect
in exchange for taking Cespedes salary off of the Mets hands. Perhaps the Mets
can attach Jed Lowie’s contract to a deal to shed his salary.
Cespedes would be
a good fit with an American League team as a designated hitter. The Cleveland
Indians can use a power hitter like Cespedes since Puig is a free agent.
Since Cespedes,
now 34 signed a four-year, $110 million dollar pact he hasn’t lived up to his
part of the contract. He has been very good when healthy with a 132 OPS plus
over the last two seasons, but has only been able to appear in 119 games over
that span.
If the Mets can’t find any takers for Cespedes and decide to keep
him he and Alonso would be a good power hitting tandem especially if Cespedes
can regain his form.
The
Mets still would like to add to their bullpen. I ‘m surprised they don’t show
an interest in former New York Yankee Dellin Betances who would still be worth
the risk even though he is coming off an injury. He has been one of the best
setup pitchers in baseball in recent years.

I cannot see Cespedes being moved until spring training, at least. If he does well, his value should go up greatly.
Someone wrote that Betances wants $10 million for a year and the Mets are balking at that. Don't go cheap on having a top notch bullpen this year, please.
He has a lot of money riding on the fact that he would be in uniform on opening day.

I would trade Cespedes as fast as you can. I would rather have JD in left going forward because I think he can do
Better than Ces can this year. I wouldn’t offer anything with him in a trade because he is reasonably priced.
I agree Thomas sign Betances already. Would of liked him and Joe Smith to have been signed.
Oh and Maldanado went for cheap back to Houston.
I will personally drive to NYC, pick up Yo and safely deliver him to his next organization!
Dealing him to a DH needy team would be a huge blessing.
I will say this about Cespedes - we just don't know how healthy he now is, and how necessary his surgeries were. Could he have played thru the pain? Seems not. The ankle fracture was clearly very careless - and costly to him.
Also, I have written this before on Macks Mets - I say him leg out a double in Sept 2015 that literally no one else on the Mets would have legged out - he was a friggin' blur going from first to second. I was truly shocked. So, we need to know how healthy the returning Cespedes is. I'd see what he can do come spring before moving him - but the Mets know more than I do about him.
He could be Nelson Cruz with more speed.
Now that Betances is on board give me a healthy Cespedes and I think the Mets can compete with anybody.

It may be difficult for Cespedes to play the outfield on a regular basis therefore they may trade him to an AL team & Betances will make the bullpen much better.
