Steve Cohen may not be the kind of guy we want to own this team. They point out
a number of businesses he has bought and turned over quickly, which is what
Hedge Fund dudes do. The problem with this is this isn’t your everyday brick
and mortar company that he is purchases. It’s his FAVORITE baseball team that
he has dreamed all his life to own. Why do you think he bought 4% back when the
Wilpons were begging for investors to keep the team from drowning?
Additionally, he is purchasing this team at a negative cash flow multiple which
makes it virtually impossible to quick sell it for a profit. No, this guy is
going to be your owner for quite a while.
I really
like John From Albany’s morning ‘Breakfast Links’ post every morning. I really
haven’t spent much time over the years reading other Mets blogs and, judging by
the titles of the posts and John’s synopsis of the content, I am reminded why.
I also am reminded why legitimate reporters turn their noses up at all of us.
Take the news that Steve Cohen is coming aboard as the new majority owner. I
counted five posts that tore this guy up even before he upgrades his seats from
the minority owner box. It sickens me that good news is even bad news in the
Mets Twitter world.
The Mets
added 23-year old catcher David Rodriguez as a
minor leaguer that will probably be assigned to AA-Binghamton. Mets Twitter
seems to blow up when there are signings like this but the majority of those
fans don’t stop to research the fact that there are four full season teams, all
of which need three catchers on their 2020 roster. Currently, the Mets have one
(Ali Sanchez) that will play Syracuse, another (Patrick Mazieka) who will probably play first base in
Syracuse, and no one currently on the Binghamton roster. St. Lucie has Mitch Gelfi, Jake Ortega, and Dan
Rizzie while Columbia will have Hayden Senger,
Phil Capra, and Juan Uriarte. Uriarte may
be bumped to AA, but we simply don’t have enough catchers on these rosters
going into 2020. Thus, the Rodriguez move.
One thing
to stick in the back of your pocket to pull out at the end of the 2025 season… Steve Cohen will be in full charge and Gerrit Cole will be able to opt out of that Yankees
contract. Just saying…

Mack - we also have Austin Bossart who we got in the Vargas trade. He was Rule 5 eligible but no one selected him.
Catching in the minors is pretty weak - for a while
All we are saying, is give Steve a chance.
If Cole opts out for 2025, we’ll sign him and his arm will blow by 2026...it’s a Mets thing.
Moreso than a free spending owner, a better plan is to stress fundamentals and defense in the minors so players are ready when they are called to the majors. Also stress the running game as part of the plan. Fonzie did this in Brooklyn last year and won. Maybe one day the Mets will understand this.
Ghelfi and Rizzie spent full seasons in St Lucie. Why not move them up in 2020 to AA. What happened to Nick Meyer? I feel that the Mets minor leagues have great potential in the catcher position in the lower levels and I feel the Mets need to be aggressive with these catchers to see how they do in the upper levels. With all the negotiations going on between Milb & MLB potentially eliminating teams maybe the Mets are too conservative moving their players through the system. Look at Kelenic he probably will play in the Majors this year while the Mets would still have him at AA.

i agree, I think we may even see ALVAREZ at the tail end of 2020 in Double A if he does well in St. Lucie/Columbia.
Nick Meyer is still on the Mets Minor League Roster. He had a tough 2019 season hitting just .182 in 64 games for St. Lucie.

I agree with your observation that negativity = Mets with most of the media and most of the fan base. It is understandable on some level, I suppose. But, things the pre-judgement of the Cohen era seems silly.
It is funny and sad to read baseball headlines and see the same concept received positively for some teams (Yankees, perhaps), while the Mets get roasted. For example, had the Yankees signed Wacha and Porcello, the headlines would have been positive for Brian Cashman's shrewd moves to build rotation depth. The Mets do the same and, well.......Wacha is broken and Porcello is over the hill.
Perhaps this will change when the new ownership takes over, but I doubt it.
Some people enjoy the negativity and the drama that comes with it.

Mike, winning changes everything. The last two seasons, after great season starts, were followed by months of gosh-awful play. That is what sticks with fans. Win well in the first half and the fans will start to be positive.
Mack, MILB has Bossart as Mets property. That usually is completely accurate
