Love or hate Gov. Andrew Cuomo - feelings on both sides are high in that regard.
But, as states like Florida have exploding COVID cases, NYS has gone tremendously in the other direction - cases are IMPLODING:
NYS peaked at 800 deaths per day in April - over the last week, that rate is more than 99% lower.
Positive test results have held steady at around 1% positive for weeks, far lower than Florida, for instance.
Cuomo's presser on the subject included this proposal yesterday:
Major League Baseball teams are welcome to play in New York if they are experiencing difficulties in their home states.
New York State has one of the lowest infection rates in the U.S. We have a full Department of Health protocol system in place.
My offer to the MLB: If you are having problems playing in other states, come play in the Empire State.
We already see Toronto deciding to play its home games in Buffalo.
Last I checked, very low virus locations exist in Binghamton and Syracuse, where the Mets play their AA and AAA games in normal times.
Broome County, where Binghamton is located, to date has had just 73 deaths and less than 1,000 positive tests. Syracuse is in Onondaga County, where there have been just 187 deaths and 3,400 positive tests to date,
Most certainly, in July those numbers are close to zero for both counties.
Since fan attendance is not a factor, my thought about a team like the besieged Marlins playing in one of those locations makes a heck of a lot of sense..
If the Marlins played, say, in Binghamton, it would be a bus (not plane) ride from Citifield, Yankee Stadium, Philly, and Boston.
Why not?
