2021 Prospect Projections: NL East rookies. Lots of interesting notes on
all the NL East teams. Among the info on
the Mets there is this: “Steamer suggests that 27-year-old Patrick Mazeika get a look at some point, two years
after he hit 16 homers and finished with a .738 OPS in a breakout season at
Double-A Binghamton…Mazeika, who is on the 40-man roster, has improved
defensively during his time in the Minors, but also saw plenty of time at first
base in 2019. He faces a much more difficult fight at the cold corner, where he
would sit behind Pete Alonso and Dominic Smith on the depth chart. The bat is at
least serviceable to get Mazeika some Major League opportunities in the months
ahead.”

1979 |
Lindsey Nelson, selected by the
expansion Mets as the team's lead announcer in 1962, reveals he will not be
returning to the Mets broadcast booth this season, ending a 17-year
partnership with Ralph Kiner and Bob Murphy. The colorfully-clad Hall of Fame
announcer, who will eventually do play-by-play for the Giants, is replaced by
Steve Albert, the younger brother of the well-known NBA Knicks and NHL
Rangers' broadcaster, Marv Albert. |
2001 |
Fifty-eight year-old Tommie Agee,
the 1966 American League Rookie of the Year, dies of cardiac arrest in
Manhattan. The World Series standout made two memorable catches in center
field at Shea Stadium (possibly saving five runs) as well as homering in the
Mets' 5-0 victory over the Orioles in Game 3 of the 1969 Fall Classic. |
2008 |
The Mets and outfielder Endy
Chavez come to terms on a $3.85 million, two-year deal. The 29 year-old
Venezuelan, who missed most of last season with a hamstring pull, will always
be remembered in Mets lore for 'the catch' in Game 7 of the 2006 NLCS against
the Cardinals. |
2010 |
The Mets, in need of a center
fielder until Carlos Beltran returns to the lineup in early May, deal 30
year-old right-handed reliever Brian Stokes (2-4, 3.97) to the Angels in
exchange for the highly-paid, but under-achieving Gary Matthews Jr. (.250, 4,
50). Los Angeles agrees to pay a significant portion of the slumping
outfielder's $50 million five-year contract that 'Little Sarge' signed three
seasons ago with the Halos. |
2016: The Mets make a couple of
moves to defend their National League pennant,
re-signing free agent outfielder Yoenis Cespedes and adding reliever Antonio Bastardo. Cespedes, the star of the team's late surge in 2015, returns after
protracted negotiations, signing for three years and $75 million, while the
price tag for Bastardo is $12 million over two years.
2020 - News emerges that Luis Rojas, son of major league outfielder and manager Felipe Alou and brother of Moises Alou, will be named manager of the Mets, in replacement of Carlos Beltran, who was dismissed for his role the 2017 Astros sign-stealing scandal before he could actually manage a game. Rojas has chosen to use his family's true last name, which was erroneously changed to the matrimonial name when his father became a professional ballplayer in the 1950s. In addition to belonging to baseball royalty, Rojas has found a lot of success managing in the minor leagues and in the Dominican Republic and was a quality control coach with the Mets.

Mazeika - I wonder if the big club really thinks he has potential? I thought his defense would be worse, but his bat would be better at this stage.
Fargas - no running into fences - just ask Mike Baxter. Unless it is for the Mets, it ain't worth the risk.
Where do the Mets go from here, signings-wise?
Someone still pumping the Kris Bryant trade. Before he was the Mets hitting coach, Chili Davis was the Cubs hitting coach. The Cubs fired Chili because Bryant and Rizzo couldn't go along with his hitting style. Something to think about.
Bob W
I'm a Patrick Mazeika fan. Power I think could translate at the highest level. Hes very "analytical" and made improvements and was really good with specific defensive metrics measures which showed during his time in AA andni guess those in the know are aware of highly ranked he was among AA catchers in those metrics.
Ernest, in Steamers, they have Mazeika around .220 with around a .300 OBP - that could get him on the big club next year. If he could add 20 points to each, he'd be a legit # 2
James McCann hit lower than that .220/.300 in 2016 and 2018, just saying.
I'm sure it would be impossible for them to predict any good numbers for a guy coming off a lost season with no mlb experience (since they never got him into a 2020 game lol).
Big Mazeika fan. I think he makes a ton of sense as a #3 catcher and lefty off bench.
Fyi, Wilmer Reyes and McGill also made Prospects 1500's top 50 list.
