As we had yesterday on Mack's Mets: The NY Mets traded Steven Matz to Toronto for three Prospects: RHP Sean Reid-Foley, RHP Yennsy Diaz and RHP Josh Winckowski.
According to MLB.com, Josh Winckowski is now their #26 prospecct and Yennsy Diaz is now their #30 prospect.

"Diaz, 24, works with a 60-grade fastball and has twice amassed more strikeouts than innings over five Minor League seasons...Winckowski was a 15th-round Draft pick out of a Florida high school in 2016. In 2018, he was the Pitcher of the Year in the Class A Short Season Northwest League (4-5, 2.78 ERA with 71 strikeouts over 68 innings), and the next year he was an All-Star in the Class A Midwest League (6-3, 2.32) before earning a promotion to the Florida State League (4-5, 3.19). At 6-foot-4, the 22-year-old throws a sinking fastball in the low 90s complemented by a 55-grade slider and an improving changeup."

Mike Puma NY Post: Mets sign Aaron Loup after missing out on top target. Loup, 33, pitched to a 2.52 ERA for the Rays last season, holding lefty batters to a .581 OPS. The lefty relief role the last two seasons with the Mets had been filled by Justin Wilson, who is a free agent.

This Mets team is taking real risks to build real quality.
The 2020 approach brought us fans to 26-34. Entirely unacceptable.
I don't expect much from the 3 prospects the Mets got. That wasn't the point. We moved out a higher salary guy who was 20-40 in his last 60 decisions for a chance to upgrade. I wish Matz figures it out in Toronto. He didn't here.
Trading Familia's contract for more salary room would also help. He is replaceable for a lot less $$. Some team out there must have a miserable closer and might see Familia as a worthwhile gamble for an upgrade.
Again, the 2020 "approach" saw the team lose its #2 and #3 starters for the season, while having it's #4 (Matz) pitch to an ERA above 9.00.
There's not a team in baseball, regardless of how solid, that can deal with that -- with the exception of one that has young studs in AAA (not so-called "depth," but real talent).
On Matz: I was puzzled that Sandy tendered Matz for $5.2 million. My chief worry was that he was counting on Matz to fill a slot in the rotation.
But I was wrong about that.
At least this way, we kept control of Matz and converted him into 3 warm bodies. Maybe one of them works out. One year Sandy traded for, I believe, 11-12 RH relievers, Rhame, etc, and they never amounted to much.
What's weird is this move is seen as a plus for payroll relief, opening space for other free agents. It doesn't in and of itself make the 2021 team any better.
There were times when I watched Matz pitch when I felt convinced he was better than Noah, that he'd have a terrific career, be a star. I don't have that feeling anymore. But man, there have been times when he's looked awfully good.
The Blue Jay sure are having an interesting off-season.

A couple other points: I really thought the existing relationship he had with McCann would pay huge dividends. I still wonder ho much of Matz's issue was working with Ramos.
If they were to trade him, I thought they could have done better - included him in a swap for a player that would fix a problem on the MLB roster. I honestly thought that he might be part of a package to the Cubs for Bryant in a swap of two players both eligible for free agency after 2021.
Matz only had one year of control and was coming off a bad year. Too, his ERA was trending the wrong way these past three years. I wish him well in upstate New York and look forward to seeing him succeed. I think more importantly for the Mets, they had cheaper and more controllable options that were similar in expected performance.
Funny how things work out. This site, for years, was all about the "FIVE ACES" hype: deGrom, Wheeler, Matz, Syndergaard, Harvey.
Waiting for it, anticipating, building around it, being patient, etc.
And now we might be on cusp of this: deGrom, Bauer, Carrasco, Strohman, Syndergaard.
