Just because you have the most money, doesn’t mean that anyone will take it.
This isn’t going to be a post where I bash the Mets’ new regime for their off-season … not after they made a full tilt effort to improve the team the likes of which we haven’t seen in a long, long time after the trade for Frankie Lindor and the signings of James McCann and Trevor May. So this isn’t “Mets should have done this or Mets should have done that.” But if you had told me after Steve Cohen and all his money took over the Mets that they would go 0-for-3 in the room with JT Realmuto, Trevor Bauer, and George Springer, I would have told you that you were out of your mind.
Realmuto was eliminated with the acquisition of James McCann, which to me is more than fine. Trevor Bauer was eliminated with the acquisition of Carlos Carrasco in the Lindor trade, and I wasn’t crazy about paying somebody $36 million for a good, but up-and-down career. The money that they saved on both of them had the Mets pointed hard towards Springer to fill the long empty hole of center field.
But alas …

The more I think about it the more it all makes sense. I too would rather keep Lindor and Conforto at 27 than pay Springer at 31 and maybe lose one of the other two. I also believe in this ownership to not screw this thing up as well and rest in the knowledge that it's not opening day yet and more moves are coming and not be straped by the Springer deal. MLB really needs to get of their butts and aprove the dam DH already because we're a MUCH better team with it.
Also guys who's your choice between Almora, JBJ, Pillar, Laureano or bring Marisnick back or any of your picks?
In my mind, among Almora, JBJ, and Pillar, JBJ is the only one that makes any sense. He is the only one of the three that would be a full time starting centerfielder. The others may be decent fielders, but will not hit anywhere near enough to get 500+ at bats. I posted someplace else that Brandon Nimmo outhits every one of the suggested righty options against both right AND left handed pitching, so it makes no sense at all to suggest a platoon. The only reason to sign another outfielder is to move Nimmo out of center over to left.
As for Laureano, he is not a free agent and would require a trade. He is a young kid that is not even arb eligible this year and wouldn't be a free agent until 2025. I cannot see the A's trading him, although I would love to see him in the blue and orange. He is a fine player that would cost a lot.
