Scouting Report - RHP - Max Debiec

 Max Debiec

RHP 6-7 200 O’Dea HS

12-3-20  -  Perfect Game combined their picks for the first two rounds in this mock draft  -

12. Seattle Mariners | Marcelo Mayer, SS, Eastlake HS | (2/41) Max Debiec, RHP, O’Dea HS

Mayer was on a short list at the top of our board as we viewed him as a top ten pick. With him still available at 12 it was a no brainer as he brings a shortstop profile with a middle of the order type bat. Debiec is a guy we have gotten plenty of looks at being from right here in Seattle. He brings a projectable 6-foot-7 frame with a mid-90s fastball and a feel for two distinct breaking balls as well as a changeup with some deception from his quick arm. -Colt Olinger

Cervino’s Take: Marcelo Mayer is potentially the top prep prospect in the class and grabbing him along with hometown prep arm Max Debiec. Mayer is a classic Southern California shortstop and fits that profile of athleticism, shortstop projection, and a polished hit tool. Debiec is a massive right-hander that offers substantial projection and should develop nicely given the time in a Mariner’s system that has turned out solid pitching in the past.

Max Debiec, RHP, O'Dea HS, Seattle

Travel Team: Canes National

Commit: Washington

Performance: 3.0 IP, 1 H, 3 ER, 2 K, 2 BB, 54 pitches (53% strikes)

Debiec has plenty of size that scouts like to see from a pitcher, with a 6-foot-7 202-pound frame that's described as "ultra projectable." With a fast arm to go on top of it and exciting pure stuff, Debiec has a lot of ingredients for scouts to get excited about.

Debiec has run his fastball up to 97 mph at its best in shorter outings this summer, but he peaked at 94 at the UBC, with his velocity ticking down into the upper 80s and low 90s as the innings progressed. He has potential with a breaking ball as well.

What scouts will look for moving forward with Debiec is more deception or the ability to miss bats more consistently. Evaluators noted that hitters managed good swings against him consistently in this event despite his stuff and he'll need to miss more bats to jump into the elite tier of arms. With his frame and the amount of weight he still should be able to pack onto it, Debiec's upside is significant.

PG-

Max Debiec is a 2021 RHP/1B with a 6-7 202 lb. frame from Seattle, WA who attends O'Dea. Very long and tall athletic build, tremendous length and physical projection. Very extended 3/4's arm slot, deep arm action in back, big leverage to the plate when everything comes together in his delivery. Fastball topped out at 97 mph early, worked mostly 92-94 mph, gets outstanding sinking action at times. Threw both a curveball and slider, slider was tight and big at times with swing and miss potential, lands the curveball well for strikes. Sells his change up well and gets nice action when he's behind it. 7.12 runner, shows real hitting potential for his size and length, swing is notably short and direct from the right side, stays quiet and timed, gets some separation and the ball comes off the barrel hard, has big power potential and crushed some balls to left centerfield. Very interesting athlete who also excels on the basketball court. High ceiling on the mound
