Mets fans have seen it all this year, and like many other years there is more frustration than elation.
So when September rolls around, both the big things and the
little things become equally infuriating.
Here are a bunch of things that get my goat, and I’d love to hear yours
in the comments. Special thanks to my
Mack’s Mets colleagues, who often share their infuriated moments in texts.
Start each line with,
“It’s infuriating when…”
…you have to buy two tickets to watch a double-header…even
though it only amounts to a game and a half (14 innings).
…we have to watch the umpires stand around awaiting the
replay officials’ decision on EVERY close play.
…major league players can’t consistently get a bunt down in
a sacrifice situation.
…the defense plays in a shift with a man on first even when they
know it will inhibit the ability to turn a double play.
…Mets batters consistently fail to advance the runner with
less than two outs.
…Mets players continue to go down with soft tissue injuries
and miss several weeks at a time.
…the Mets can’t score more than 1 or 2 runs against every
pitcher that gets called up for his first MLB start.
…Mets pitching game planning falls apart – they have trailed
after 2 innings in 20 of 49 games since the all-star break.
…a relief pitcher leads the team in victories.
…a talented hitter like Baez can’t lay off sliders that are
way off the plate.
…Luis Rojas will insert a batter with a .200 average to get
a righty-lefty matchup, but won’t pinch run for a slow guy who represents the
tying run on first in the late innings.
…Gary Disarcina holds runners at third on a single with two
out…as if this Mets team will ever get TWO hits with RISP and 2 out.
…86 wins can win the NL east this year…and we’re not sure
the Mets can get there.
And finally…it’s infuriating when as writers we can’t do anything but write about it.

It's infuriating when...
People keep blaming Mets managers for lineup cards when they don't fill them out.
You hire a ton of draft nerds and they don't even have a Plan B when their top pick doesn't sign
When I can't find anyone that has ever seen a baby pigeon
When our owner feeds the fire by tweeting incendiary tweets. (yesterday's Baez tweet)
And when people ask me what infuriates me.
It's infuriating when a new owner comes on board and nothing of significance changes for the better. We can't blame the 2021 season on the Wilpons, but we can direct some animosity towards the guy who didn't change what needed to be changed.
Infuriating to sit key guys in the 2nd game of a DH. Which was a costly loss. The key guys CANNOT sit one more game. Period.
But yes,all the points you raise are collectively infuriating.
It's infuriating to cough up a 9-0 lead, or give up 3 runs in the bottom of the first after scoring 4 in the top of the first.
It's infuriating to see a strikeout and a double play with the bases loaded and nobody out.
OK, any grounding into a double play is infuriating
It is infuriating to give up any run the next half inning after taking the lead.
