OPEN THREAD - 2022 Manager

Moving ahead...

We will do a daily thread on your projection for position by position players in 2022.

But, before that...

Who would be your choice to manage the 2022 Mets?

Not sure on who will be available come the end of the season. I am tired of the kumbaya, make the players feel good type like Rojas and Calloway before him. These guys need a kick in the butt from time to time.

I care about winning. That means the Terry Collins types who set records for the number of losing games as a manager should be nowhere near this discussion. I am not against managers who can motivate by making players feel good, but we have not seen that from Luis Rojas. I advocated bringing back Edgardo Alfonzo, but I suspect they will want to go with a bigger name. The other way to go is to find someone from a winning organization such as Skip Schumaker from the Padres who is in a would-be manager role.

I don’t know that I’d call San Diego a winning organization.

Keith Hernandez. He knows how to have baseball conversations with players that stimulate them to play better. He has a healthy disdain for some of the trends in baseball (shifts, launch angle) that are being way overused. He understands hitting and field positioning at a level that few position coaches can. These are some of the things Alfonso had, but for whatever reason the organization disowned him.

The only drawback with Keith is that he is bigger than life in New York, and he could overshadow the team. He would have to check the ego and make it all about the NYMs, accepting blame when things go awry, and building up the players publicly even if he is scolding them in private for some of the bonehead things that Rojas lets them do today.

Texas Gus?

I'd be okay with Beltran.

Why don’t you like me Tom, what did I do to you? LOL!

I have a few things to get off my chest:
1
Yesterday, Gary Disarcina sends Alonso on one of the worst "sends" in history. Just stupid with no outs and KGR let DiSarcina have it. He has been a bad third base coach since he got here.

Then you have The Dinosaur Alderson firing Chili Davis because he doesn’t use analytics enough even though for two years Davis was pretty successful and the players like him. Who cares who the players like, kiss my ring Davis.

Then you have Rojas’ managing… I’ll skip that summary.

Maybe the real problem is behind the scenes.

Padres are firing their manager, but I’d like to see this:
Keith as manager, but he won’t do it. Mazzilli as bench coach. He’s a good baseball guy.
Alfonzo as third base coach and hitting coach. Backman as first base coach. Let’s start with that.

Backman also as base running coach. He was a very successful base runner. I want to start seeing winners and smart people have these jobs, not guys with good references that we know nothing about.

Mazzilli has really impressed me with his knowledge and comprehension of situations during a game.

Hefner can be the pitching coach, and I’m sure there are qualified people to handle the other positions. How about we just see what’s right in front of us for a change?

Beltran as an outfield coach and assistant hitting coach?

Gosh, I love this assembly!!! Alderson would scoff, of course. No butt kissers there!

Tom Brennan said...

Texas Gus, I was serious. Why not? I want to win once more in my lifetime, I am willing to take risks.

Your assemblage works well for me. Now, we just need a competent and willing manager…

I may be alone in wanting to give Luis more time, but one of the biggest criticisms of him stems from his lack of mgr experience at the ML level.

Yet all the suggestions I see above are people with zero ML mgr time. In this time of analytics-driven decisions, I wouldn't want a re-cycled "old school" - type who would clash with the new style decision-makers, but I would want someone with ML experience.

Steve C was very clear when he said he didn't want someone "learning on my dime". Let the new President bring in his choice of GM, who in turn will pick the mgr.

I posted a few days ago about Wally Beckman. To say he hates Alderson would be a gross understatement. He is not coming back as long as Sandy is there.

I didn’t think it was Alderson that got rid of Backman, I thought it was Brodie.
