Mack - 2022 MLB Draft Scouting Report - LHP - Jackson Ferris

Jackson Ferris

LHP      6-4      190        IMG Academy

Mack's spin -

You can see first hand why prospects move to Florida and attend the IMG acadey. Ferris' fast ball only topped at 91 wieh he pitched back home in North Carolina, but one year of IMG training pushed that heater to 95.

The good news here is, when he is is in control, he's probably the best sourthpaw in this draft.

The bad news is when he's not in control, which is often, he is... well, you get the picture.

Still, #9 on my LHP board.

8. Jackson Ferris, LHP, IMG Academy (Fla.)

College commitment: Mississippi

When he’s in sync, Ferris might be the best prep lefty in the class, but his unorthodox delivery can lead to some command issues. Still, he’s projectable at 6-foot-4, with a fastball easily in the mid 90s and a good breaking ball. He moved from North Carolina to attend IMG Academy for his senior year.

Jackson Ferris

Last summer, Jackson Ferris was sitting 88-91 MPH with his fastball at the Area Code Underclass games. Shortly thereafter, he transferred from Mount Airy, NC to IMG Academy in Florida and his velocity ticked up significantly. He’s held it so far this summer and at PG National, the heater was exceptional. He sat 92-95 MPH and touched 96 MPH with the heater and racked up all six strikeouts on the pitch. It has great late life and kept hitters confused the whole outing. The curveball was in the high-70’s and Ferris manipulated the shape of it at times, though it did become slurvy. He did flash a change-up in the mid-80’s that has progressed well. We are going to keep a close eye on his progress this cycle.

 # 53 Jackson Ferris LHP IMG

Academy Ferris has a long, yet relatively clean arm action and has plenty of projection on his frame to add strength and velocity. Primarily 93-95, Ferris has been up to 97 with a fastball that showcases huge riding life. His curveball has solid depth with big, tight spin in the mid-70's and there is a change-up in the low-80's that needs refinement. The fastball is the calling card here and it absolutely blows hitters away.

Jackson Ferris’ stock is at all-time high after a dominant junior season.

The Mount Airy-native has turned heads even when put up against the top baseball recruits in the country. He’s considered by many baseball pundits to be a guaranteed first-round pick in the 2022 MLB draft.

Ferris, a left-handed pitcher, spent his freshman and sophomore years at Mount Airy High School before transferring to IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. With the move, Ferris ended a verbal commitment with N.C. State and committed to the University of Mississippi.

If his 6-foot 4-inch frame wasn’t enough to make Ferris stand out, his 94-mph fastball and 77-mph curveball are.

Jackson Ferris (N.C.)

 6-4/190 L/L

Commitment: Ole Miss

PG Events: 23

Key Stats: 66 1/3 innings pitched, 90 strikeouts, 1.12 WHIP

Short Story: The blend of projection, current pitchability, and firm stuff puts Ferris at the forefront of the 2022 class heading into summer. He has built a resume over the last 18 months that few can match. The velocity has steadily risen in to the mid-90s and there has been no drop off in command.

Big Moment: During the playoffs at the 16U WWBA he threw five innings and struck out seven against an absolutely loaded lineup. It wasn't the firm stuff, or the outcome, it was the environment. An absolutely packed house with high emotions from everyone in the complex, except Ferris. He was cool, calm, and collected on his way to throwing a gem.

Bold Prediction: The body continues to fill out and a slow heartbeat makes his outings boring, in the best way possible as there is no offense to speak of from opposing lineups.

 2022 Jackson Ferris Mississippi

6-3 180. Electric stuff here from the lefty. Very loose repeatable mechanics, Pitches well to both sides of the plate, has arm side run on the FB and has above average spin on the breaking ball.

FB: 92-94

CB: 74-77

 86. Jackson Ferris - LHP

 Bio:

 Height: 6-4

Weight: 185 lbs

Hits/Throws: L-L

Hometown: Mount Airy, North Carolina

School: IMG Academy (FL)

A recent transfer to IMG Academy, Ferris has a relatively clean arm action and has plenty of projection on his frame to add strength and velocity. Primarily 88-91 MPH throughout the summer, Ferris has touched 93 MPH as recently as WWBA. His curveball has solid depth with tight spin in the mid-70's and there is a change-up in the low-80's that needs refinement.

11-27-20 - PG -

Ferris was unhittable all summer and fall, winning the Most Valuable Pitcher award at the WWBA 16U National Championships while striking out 43 hitters against nine walks in 24 innings, allowing only five hits.  His stuff improved the entire travel season as well and he was working in the 90-93 mph range to go with a dominant curveball and change up at the WWBA World Championships in October.
