Mack - 2022 MLB Scouting Report - #53 - RHP - Adam Maier

Adam Maier

RHP          Univ. British Columbia

2020 UBC stat line - 5-G, 2-ST, 3-0, 2.84, 19-IP, 22-K, 4-BB

Mack's spin -

Scroll down and read the ink on this stud.

One report has him as the best slider at the Cape. Another has him as the top breaking ball IN THE DRAFT.

It also doesn't hurt when you look like a young Matt Harvey.

Currently on my board:  15th RHP.

55 Adam Maier

RHP

Oregon

North Vancouver While the University of British Columbia doesn't traditionally provide a ton of draft-eligible talent, Maier figures to buck that trend. Maier transferred to Oregon for 2022 and figures to be a weekend guy for the Ducks. Up to 96 with significant armspeed and athleticism on a heavy heater, some believe Maier is a starter long-term. He's got an extremely high-spin slider exceeding 3000 RPM, as well as a deceiving changeup that gets whiffs against lefty bats. Maier will need to show he can hold velocity over long outings, but the arm talent is substantial.

9-1-21 - PG: Cape Cod Wrap Up: Top Tools -

Best Slider: Adam Maier, RHP, Oregon | Yarmouth-Dennis (2022)

Why: A 2900 rpm frisbee that was up to >22 of horizontal sweep that he landed in the zone frequently with a 64% strike rate this summer. What makes the pitch so effective is his ability to generate ground balls (55% groundball rate) and miss bats (46% whiff rate, 17% swinging strike) while showing strong feel and command. Sitting 83-85 mph, Maier peppered the glove side with consistency. The pitch became the focal point of his arsenal in his third start, and he began to throw the slider with greater regularity than his fastball. There were several contenders as this was one of the more contentious categories, with plenty of viable candidates with many listed below.

3,000+ RPM frisbee SL, swing and miss pitch to RHH/LHH. Pound’s turbo sinker at bottom of zone, up to 96 MPH. CH potential to develop into above average secondary offering due to movement profile and depth. Cape season was first time he pitched as a college pitcher due to Covid restrictions in Canada. Above average Si/SL mix will allow Maier to be sent out as starter.

ADAM MAIER

University of British Columbia, RHP

The fastest rising name from a Canadian perspective and maybe one of the fastest rising prospects overall for 2022, Maier figures to head the charge for UBC next spring. Prospects Live prospects evaluator Geoff Pontes (@ProspectJesus) saw Maier on the cape this summer and left in awe. The solidly built right-hander was 92-93, but his secondaries might be the story here. Maier features a plus slider with very high spin rate and an above average changeup. With only 19 collegiate innings, there’s still plenty to prove. Maier is also young for the college class as he doesn’t turn 20 until November. The combination of his three-pitch mix and age, Maier has the opportunity to absolutely fly up draft boards, though the competition he’ll face in Canada figures to be step back from the opposition on the Cape. Maier has the legitimate possibility of being the first Canadian off the board next July. He’s got Top-100 pick upside.

Here's a minute of arguably the best breaking ball in the 2022 draft (yes, I'm that confident a year out lol)

Adam Maier's SL is one of the best I've seen at the amateur level. Ridiculously high spin/high spin eff combo w/ good velocity for the sweep

45% SL CSW on the Cape

RHP Adam Maier (University of British Columbia)

Adam Maier came to the Cape with not a lot known about him. His 2021 season was cancelled due to the pandemic and it was hard for scouts to see him due to the issues crossing the Canadian border. However, it didn't take long for him to capture tons of attention from brass and decision makers. Maier features an above average two seam fastball that sits 91-94 with tons of arm-side run and sink, a mid-80s changeup that mimics the two seamer's movement profile, as well as a slider in the low 80s with elite spin metrics. To say that his performance on the Cape was impressive would be an understatement; Maier pitches for the University of British Columbia, an NAIA school, so this is the best competition he'll face leading up to the 2022 draft. His arsenal sure looks like high-round stuff, and with no red flags in the delivery and a promising frame.
