Tom Brennan: Don’t Ever Throw in the Towel

WHAT A 1962 ROTATION!

The following proves anything is possible in baseball. Even against LAD.

On August 24, 1962, the Mets faced the mighty Dodgers in the Polo Grounds. A huge 39,741 were in attendance.

Behind Jay Hook’s complete game, 145 pitch, effort, the Mets won 6-3.

The losing pitcher? Don Drysdale (the 1962 Cy Young winner) fell to 22-7, surrendering HRs to Choo Choo Coleman, Rod Kanehl, and marvelous Marv Throneberry. They also got 2 hits in 0.2 IP against pen ace Ron Peranoski.

The win moved the Mets to within 50 games of the Dodgers. Already mathematically eliminated, but for a day, they were the last man standing.

Never give up.

Same as it ever was.

What player wouldn’t love the glitz, glamor, crowds, sunshine and low humidity in LA. Just need to avoid the city burning down or shaking into the Pacific, and you’re all good.

Some of those same Mets fans that were at the Polo Grounds on that day are still Mets fans today. That is what exemplifies, "Never give up"!
