Tom Brennan: Would You Take These Stats for the Next 6 Seasons From Soto? And Pete, Patience, and Spending

CRUSHED

If you thought about Juan Soto's next 6 (age 26-31) Mets' seasons...

Would you be satisfied with the following averages per season?

.314/.367/.515 slash

42 doubles, 26 HRs, 96 runs, 99 RBIs

That is what the infamous ex-Met (and Yankee/Mariner) Robinson Cano produced in his six age 26-31 seasons.  Impressive.

(His power numbers dropped in his age 31 season, the first season in which he switched from the Bronx Porch to the Seattle Pitchers' Haven, by the way).

Me, though? I want more than those Cano numbers from Super Soto.

From Soto, I'm hoping for six years averaging .285/.415/.550

35 doubles, 38 HRs, 105 runs, 110 RBIs.

Less average, but much higher OBP and better HR power, runs, and RBIs.

Dontcha know?

PETE, AND SPENDING VS. INSTANT GRATIFICATION

We all want the roster finalized today.

Anxious to get it nailed down and begin getting excited about a 2025 team we can visualize as winners.

Regarding unfilled positions, a long term contract to someone (say, with the initials PA) can be rushed into - if a team is willing to spend more and commit for longer.  "More and longer" will, however, impact future signings, both for 2025 and beyond.

Every dollar that the Mets might spend on PA will essentially be doubled by luxury tax.  So, if PA's contract for 2025 is $30 million, it will cost the Mets $60 million, more or less.  Not chump change.

It thus behooves the Mets to go slow. Wait them out, whittle them down.

Last year, JD Martinez appeared as if he would cost multiple years at a high price.  Instead, he ended up inking a deal for one year at $12 million, with a substantial portion deferred.

It definitely paid for the Mets to wait.  Especially when luxury taxes are so onerous. Sometimes, you just have to wait, or you as a fan will be mad down the road in future years, wondering why they mortgaged their future through careless spending.

So relax, go outside and throw some sweeper snowballs.

Just keep them under 95 MPH, please.  Don't hit anyone, either, unless that someone is Bryce Harper strolling by. Then let those snowballs FLY!

WAITING TOO LONG?

Of course, one can over-wait and miss out.  The reliever market suddenly has awoken, as reported below.  Will the Mets finally get Tanner Scott, or let him get away "Scott-free"?  Don't wait too long.

"Toronto announced Friday that it inked a three-year deal with right-hander Jeff Hoffman..the ex-Phillies right-hander’s contract is worth $33 million, with incentives potentially bringing it up to $39 million." (Source: NY Post)

Better walk. You may slip and get hurt if you run.😁

I agree with the patience. Look at what happened with Iglesias last year. Signed late, after missing a full season, had a great year here in so many ways.

I am getting impatient about Pete, though. David needs to know what move is next, and while Pete's status is unknown other guys who might replace him if he walks are signing elsewhere. Whether he stays or goes, once the decision is made IMO David will make a few moves quickly.

Bill, I think if Stearns gets to the point where he feels hindered by Pete’s delays, he may nicely give Pete’s poop or get off the pot message.

I like your Soto numbers projection better than Cano's history, although I will bump up the runs scored to 120 and the RBIs down a bit to the 90-100 range. Unless they trade for Arraez to hit in the 9 hole, there may not be enough offense to have all those RBI in the 2 spot.

Soto will definitely score more runs if the Mets stack the lineup behind him. So let's do that!
