When evaluating high school players, teams will often look for upside and projection. At the plate, that could mean future power potential. On the mound, it might be about more velocity or better stuff to come. Sometimes, all of that comes in one player. That’s what Brock Ketelsen brings to the table in northern California after showing off skills on both sides at summer showcase events like PG National and the Area Code Games.

Right now, it seems like area scouts like Ketelsen a little bit better in the field than on the mound, though some of that might be because he hasn’t pitched as much. As an outfielder, Ketelsen has an outside chance to stick in center field if he can get back to the plus run times he showed earlier in his high school career. If not, he profiles well as an athletic right fielder type with an arm that’s at least plus. At the plate, he shows the ability to make consistent contact with low swing-and-miss rates. He’s more of a singles and doubles hitter right now, though he’s shown some ability to tap into his raw power, with more to come as he fills out his 6-foot-4 frame.

While evaluators might like his offensive game a bit more, some think he could have even more ceiling on the mound should he focus on it. He has a very clean left-handed delivery with good feel for his stuff. His athleticism plays on the mound as he can repeat his delivery and throw strikes with a fastball that sits 88-92 mph now with ride and run, a true 12-to-6 curve thrown in the low 70s and an upper-70s changeup that drops off the table. It will be a fun debate as the spring goes on which side of his projectable game comes to the fore, but the biggest issue could be signing him away from his Stanford commitment.

41. Brock Ketelsen – OF

HT/WT: 6’4/202 | Bat/Throw: L/L | School: Valley Christian Schools (CA) | Commitment: Stanford | Age: 17.11

Ketelsen is a bit of an unknown, but his mix of tools and projection makes him a quality prospect at this stage in the cycle. At 6’4, 195 pounds, Ketelsen is rather lanky and features a lot of twitchy actions in his game.

A left-handed bat, Ketelsen has very impressive bat speed and displays accuracy with his barrel through the zone, staying short and direct to the baseball. There’s already present strength and power in the profile, mainly to the gaps and pull side, though as he adds weight to his frame, expect the power to tick up.

His hips open up violently and there’s natural loft to the swing. In the field, he’s likely a corner outfielder at the next level, though he’s able to cover a ton of ground thanks to his lengthy stride and quality speed.

He runs like a gazelle in the outfield and shows defensive maturity, giving him a solid outlook with the glove. He has also seen time on the bump, getting up to 92 MPH from the left side. Ketelsen is one of the youngest players in the class, too.

With that said, he is a Stanford commit, which is something to keep an eye on come draft day.

2024 National Showcase

Brock Ketelsen is a 2025 OF/LHP with a 6-4 195 lb. frame from Scotts Valley, CA who attends Valley Christian Schools. Tall and high waisted prospect with a ton of physical projection remaining. Ran a 6.55 in the sixty yard dash. A primary outfielder, smooth strides with excellent transfer skills and a big throwing arm. Easy actions and the potential to stay in centerfield. A left-handed hitter, smooth stroke with a whippy bat and good feel for the barrel. Projects to hit for power and average. Also a left-handed hitter with excellent upside. The heater has arm side run and pairs with the hard slider well. Highest level two way prospect and young for the grade. Young for the grade. Committed to Stanford. Selected to play in the Perfect Game All-American Classic.

An alum of Team California at the 2023 Prep Baseball Future Games, the 6'4, 215 lbs. two-way talent showed his potential on each side of the game throughout the 2024 summer circuit. With an impact bat from the LH side that features power, there is plenty to like about what Ketelsen can do at the plate, but adding a FB into the low 90's with an easy athletic delivery, his ability on the mound combines to help him make the move into the Top 10.
