B-Mets Game Notes

YESTERDAY’S GAME: After playing the sixth-longest game in B
-Mets’ history by time, Binghamton and Trenton played their
shortest game of the four-game series with the B-Mets coming
out on top 4-3. Binghamton took advantage of an error and
Thunder starter Zach McAllister’s erratic command to lead 3-0
after three innings. However, the Thunder put up runs in three
consecutive frames against B-Mets’ starter Jose Sanchez tying
the game. In the seventh, however, Binghamton plated their
winning run as Shawn Bowman drove in Emmanuel Garcia
with a go-ahead single to right field. Julio De La Cruz and Roy
Merritt made it stand up. Merritt picked up his second save.

STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: RHP Ryan Coultas makes his
first professional start on the hill today after spending all of
2008 as a reliever with St. Lucie (High-A). He appeared in 47
games for St. Lucie last season with a 4.17 ERA. Drafted in
the sixth round out of UC-Davis, Coultas spent his first four
years in the Mets’ system as a shortstop.
Trenton counters with RHP Ryan Pope who made 20 starts
with Tampa (High-A) last season. Pope was tremendous in the
first half of the season with Tampa tallying a 2.81 ERA in 51.1
IP before the All-Star break, but went downhill in the second
half with a 5.47 ERA in his final 52.2 innings of the season.
Pope, however, did end the 2008 season on a bright note,
tossing seven shutout innings against Fort Myers

THROW OUT THE RECORD BOOKS!: Once again, Binghamton
and Trenton found their way to extra innings early in 2009,
playing 14 innings Thursday. Last season the two teams
played 13 innings in a game that last 4:01 on April 22 at
NYSEG Stadium. Thursday’s game was the sixth longest game
in B-Mets history spanning 4 hours and 42 minutes.
WRONG SIDE OF THE HISTORY BOOKS: In the 14-inning lost to
Trenton on Thursday, the B-Mets set a new record for strikeouts
at the plate with 18, besting the previous record of 17
set three times, last 4/26/07 at New Hampshire, a game that
went to 13 innings at NYSEG Stadium.

HISTORY LESSON: This is the B-Mets 18th consecutive season
Eastern League season and 92nd season overall dating back
to the Binghamton Bingoes of the New York State League,
who debuted in 1885. Binghamton was a charter member of
the Eastern League playing from 1923-1963 and again in
1967 and 1968 as the Binghamton Triplets. When the Triplets
began play in 1923, however, the league was dubbed the New
York-Pennsylvania League. It was not until 1938 that the
league garnered the “Eastern League” moniker.
