Sand Gnats Name New Coach

Ryan Ellis has been named the new hitting coach for the Savannah Sand Gnats in 2009, the New York Mets announced Friday. George Greer, who had been slated to come to Savannah for his second season, has been moved up to High-A St. Lucie.

Ellis, 30, spent the 2008 campaign with the Kingsport Mets of the Appalachian League. Last year, the Kingsport Mets had the third best batting average in the 10-team Appy League, hitting .270 in 66 contests. This will be his third full season with the Mets organization. Prior to 2007, Ellis served as a coach for Double-A Binghamton.

A 28th round draft pick in 2000 by the Montreal Expos, Ellis played two seasons with Vermont, Montreal’s New York-Penn League affiliate. He then played one season with the Washington Wild Things of the Frontier League before becoming a coach for Washington from 2003-05.
