49. D.J. Wabick – OF –
Wabick was originally drafted out of high school in 2002, in the 38th round, by the Chicago White Sox, but chose to go to college instead. “DJ” first played college ball in Illinois and then I transferred down south to a junior college in Florida. Eventually, he transferred once more to The College of Charleston, where he hit .415 with 9 homers, 27 doubles, 66 RBIs, and 26 walks in 63 games.
The Mets drafted Wabick in the 25th round of the 2005 draft. He played 10 games in 2005 with Brooklyn and 45 with Kingsport, where he hit .303.. Wabick had an exceptional year in 2006 for Kingsport, hitting .327/.415/.455, and finished 4th in the league in hitting and on-base percentage. He ended the year in Brooklyn. 2007 was a fantastic year for D.J.,
batting .306/.348/.442 in 428 at bats. That includes 32 doubles, 8 HRs, and 64 RBIs.
Wabick grew up in Palos Park, Illinois, which is on the South Side of Chicago.
In 2008, Wabick hit .289/.333/.403 for St. Lucie, which easily won him a promotion to the next level, AA-Binghamton.
In 2009, he did it again, this time hitting .296/.324/.401/725 for Binghamton, with 4-HR and 55-RBI.
Forecast: Have you ever seen anything written about this guy? He really hasn’t done much wrong as a minor leagues and has earned himself a promotion every season since he has put on a Mets uniform. The problem is the same guys like Jesus Feliciano have. No pop on a team that demands it to become a starter in Queens. It seems to bme that the minimum slugging percentage needed is what guys like Jeff Francouer produces, and the Mets already have a capable number four outfielder who can spray hits in Angel Pagan. Trade bait, maybe, if he continues to produce +.285 hitting at AAA.
