Monday morning when Fred and Jeff Wilpon, and their advisors sit down to discuss the 2009 season, they need to ask themselves some very serious questions. Some of those questions should be:Is Omar Minaya the right gut to lead this club? How could Omar Minaya, and the scouting staff so badly overrate the starting pitching on this club?Did Omar get a kick-back when he signed Ollie Perez to that 3 year deal (joking)?Should Dan Warthen stay on as pitching coach?Met's pitcher's walked a ton of guys this year, they gave up a bunch of runs, why?How could the medical staff have so badly misdiagnosed so many injuries? Was is smart company policy to mislead the fans thinking the Big Three stars would be back by the All Star Break, then August 1?How can we improve our starting pitching? Is Mike Pelfrey done in NY? Has he peaked?
Bryce Harper may be considered a top draft pick by many, but Jameson Taillon made a statement by striking out 16 Cuban hitters in the United States 6-1 win over Cuba in the gold medal for the 18 and unders. It was a first gold medal for the United States in the 18 and under Pan Am games. Cuba had won the last seven gold medals in the event.
For the first six innings the game was scoreless as Cuban lefty Julio Martinez equaled the goose eggs thrown by Jameson. Each pitcher had a 2-hit shutout after six innings. The United States team then erupted in the seventh inning, loading the bases with one out and then getting a clutch 2-run single from Brian Ragira to begin the onslaught. The United States sent 11 batters to the plate before the inning was complete and had a commanding 6-0 lead. Cuba scored their last run in the bottom of the ninth.

At a time when Bobby Valentine has begun the process of talking with teams about a possible return as a manager in Major League Baseball, sources said he is in communication with the Florida Marlins about a possible position with that team -- less than eight months after Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez received a two-year extension.
Gonzalez, 45, has managed the Marlins the last two seasons after replacing Joe Girardi, and Florida has contended in both years. Gonzalez was named The Sporting News Manager of the Year in 2008. Gonzalez agreed to a two-year extension with the Marlins in spring training, and he is signed through the 2011 season.
However, there has been concern on the coaching staff this week after they were told that no decision has been made about whether to bring them back for 2010. Jeffrey Loria, the Marlins' owner, is meeting with club executives after the end of the regular season.
For only the second time in modern Major League Baseball history—and the second time in four years—a full regular season will go into the books without a 20-game winner.
CC Sabathia of the Yankees and Adam Wainwright of the Cardinals each was denied Friday night in his bid for a 20th victory. They are the only present 19-game winners, and there are only two days left in the regular season, so no pitcher will reach what once was a standard milestone.
...Wainwright was saddled with a no-decision when the Brewers rallied against the Cardinals’ bullpen for a 12-6 victory. Like Sabathia, Wainwright ended up with a 19-8 record.
“This is right there with the most disappointing, toughest regular-season losses that I can remember,” manager Tony La Russa said. “It was an important win for us if we can get it with what was at stake. Adam has been so great all year long. I’m really, really disappointed.”
..."I could taste it,” Wainwright said of the 20th victory. “And that may be why the first two guys got on, I got a little ahead of myself there. I started thinking a little too far forward I think. We win that game 99 times out of 100. Our bullpen has been great this year and I pride myself on not giving away leads. I’ll take my chances with a six-run lead all day.”
