5 4 4-13: - Q&A, Top Prospects Under 20, Strasburg, Super 2 Status... and Pujois Passes Hodges

Q&A:

1. Jhonny Segura asked: "Hey Mack will the mets have a chance on drafting that 17 year old phenom catcher heauver? (I think that's how it's spell!)"

I assume you mean Bryce Harper. There’s always a chance he could fall as low as the seventh pick, only because of the money it is going to take to sign him, but I don’t thinkthere is any chance he isn’t picked first in the draft. The Nats ownership can afford to lose some more money and it’s rare someone that seems to be this special doesn’t get chosen when your turn comes around.

Right now I believe the Nets will pick him, followed by the Pirates chosing LHP Chris Sale.

Fellow LHP Drew Pomeranz is a lock to go early, as is RHP Jamerson Taillon… which means the Mets may have an opportunity to pick the early on favorite to be the 2nd pick overall, RHP Anthony Renaudo. Renaudo is considered to be falling on the board due to a pre-season injury that got him off to a slow start.

If not Renaudo, look for either RHP A.J. Cole, or RHP Deck McGuire.

Top Prospect Under 20:

The Mets are reloading with a bevy of prospects under 20. You have the fight for third base between Wilmer Flores and Jefry Marte. The loser will move to the outfield or be used as trade bait. Don’t expect Wilmer to play short. Ugueth Urbina’s son Juan was signed for $1.2 million. Finally, you have the 2009 second round pick Steve Matz, whose $895,000 was above slot. - mwob

Strasburg:

Strasburg pitched five innings and allowed four hits, two walks, and four runs (one earned) while striking out eight batters. He was credited with the win as Harrisburg beat Altoona 6-4. Strasburg survived a wobbly opening inning, giving up a double, single, and walk after retiring the first two hitters. The righthander retired the side in order in the second and third innings, striking out the final two batters in both frames. He was a victim of poor fielding in the fourth when Altoona scored three unearned runs, then worked a 1-2-3 fifth to finish his assignment for the afternoon. Overall, the fireballer threw 82 pitches with his fastball sitting at 97-99 through the first three innings and touching 100 a few times. His 83-mph hammer curve was generally effective and he flashed an 89/90-mph changeup with diving, tailing action that resembled a two-seam fastball. With three plus to plus-plus offerings, Strasburg's stuff is unrivaled in both the minors and majors. While money considerations will dictate the timing of Strasburg's MLB debut, his command will determine whether he is just the best pitcher on the Nationals or one of the best hurlers in the National League this year. - link

Super 2 Status:

The thrust is simple: If a team parks a player in the minor leagues for at least 20 days to begin the season, it can delay his free agency by one year. Teams looking to save money go a step further and keep players down for about two months, which prevents them from gaining the Super 2 status that gives the top 17 percent of any service class an extra year of salary arbitration. Because of the service-time rules, the Nationals could save upward of $20 million by keeping Strasburg in the minors until their June 4 series against Cincinnati. - yahoo.

-probably a good reason you won’t see Ike Davis until some time next month

Pujois Passes Hodges:

Albert Pujols hit two home runs Sunday night to pass Ralph Kiner on the all-time home run list, and his fifth home run of the season puts him past Gil Hodges. Albert now has 371 career dingers, good for 67th place. Twenty nine more home runs puts him at 400 for his career, and 46th on the all-time list. He might even catch Duke Snider this year at 407. The Cardinals lead the Astros 4-0 in the fifth as Houston’s offense continues to struggle. - baseballmusings
