Daytona 10, St. Lucie 5

The St. Lucie Mets dropped their fifth game in a row, a 10-5 loss at the hands of the Daytona Cubs Tuesday night at Digital Domain Park. The loss was the Mets sixth consecutive loss to the Cubs and puts the Mets at 17-14 on the second half of the season and 55-46 overall.

Armando Rodriguez got the start for the Mets and ran into trouble early and often. The Cubs plated four runs in the first inning belting two home runs in the frame and chased Rodriguez from the game in the second inning scoring four more times to jump out to an 8-0 lead. The Mets would not be able to recover. Trailing 8-0 in the fourth inning, Wilmer Flores got the Mets on the scoreboard by hitting his seventh home run of the season, a solo shot to make it an 8-1 game. RBI singles by Pedro Zapata and Flores in the fifth inning made it 8-4. Zapata would single in another run in the seventh inning making it 8-5, but that’s as close as the Mets would get. Jeff Kaplan allowed a two-run home run in the top of the ninth and the Mets managed only a walk in the bottom of the ninth as they could not rebound from the tough start.

Rodriguez took the loss lasting only 1.1 innings allowing seven runs, six earned on six hits. Pedro Zapata and Wilmer Flores led the Mets each with two hits, two RBI and a run scored. Cesar Puello had a two-hit game as well and scored twice in the loss. The Mets sent five pitchers to the hill to try to contain the Cubs. Estarlin Morel and Eric Niesen each tossed two scoreless innings and Brandon Sage allowed a run over 1.2 innings. Jeff Kaplan pitched the final two innings allowing two runs on three hits.

The Mets look to snap their five-game losing streak and record their first win against the Cubs Wednesday night at Digital Domain Park. John Church will make a spot start for the Mets. This will be Church’s first start of the season. In 29 appearances, Church is 3-1 with a 5.03 ERA and 39 strikeouts to 23 walks while opposing hitters are batting .265 against him covering 48.1 innings of work.
