Reading 5, Binghamton 2

A day removed from pounding out 11 runs on 15 hits, Binghamton was limited to five hits and lost 5-2 to Reading at First Energy Stadium Friday night. Matt den Dekker smacked a two-run homer in the fifth inning to account for all of the B-Mets’ run-scoring. It marked his fourth home run in the last three games.



Reading (52-47) climbed on top in the first inning and would not relinquish the lead. Freddy Galvis snuck aboard on an infield single to short. Fidel Hernandez followed and smoked a hanging breaking ball from Tobi Stoner over the wall in left field to give the R-Phils a 2-0 lead.



Binghamton (40-60) made some noise in the top of the second against B.J. Rosenberg. With two outs, Eric Campbell reached on an infield hit. Kai Gronauer drew a walk to push Campbell to second. Jon Malo became the third straight to reach with a bloop single to right. Campbell motored around third trying to score. However, Tim Kennelly’s throw beat him to the plate and John Suomi held onto the ball despite Campbell plowing through the smaller catcher to end the inning. Suomi and Campbell exchanged words after the play resulting in Campbell’s ejection by third base umpire Jon Saphire. Suomi, ironically, would later be ejected for arguing an out call at first after grounding out in the eighth.



The R-Phils got back on the board in the bottom of the second. Kennelly led off with a single. Rosenberg followed and sacrificed the runner into scoring position. Galvis took care of the rest with a ground-rule double to right, scoring Kennelly to make it 3-0.



Stoner settled in from there, at one point retiring 10 consecutive batters, and exited to the loss after five innings. He allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out four.

The B-Mets only runs came in the fifth. Malo reached on his second single of the game to lead off the inning. After Stoner sacrificed him to second, den Dekker mashed a two-run blast to center for his sixth homer of the season.



Rosenberg notched his second straight win with five innings of two-run work. He struck out five.



The Reading bullpen was stingy following the starter. Josh Zeid struck out five of the six hitters he faced over two, perfect innings. Jake Diekman finished the game with two, shutout innings for his third save.



The R-Phils added two runs of insurance in the eighth against Erik Turgeon. Derrick Mitchell got the green light on a 3-0 count and launched a two-run homer to left with one out in the frame.
