St. Lucie 7, Daytona 2

The St. Lucie Mets snapped their 5-game losing streak with a 7-2 victory over the Daytona Cubs Wednesday night at Digital Domain Park. The win was the first Mets win over the Cubs in seven meetings this year. St. Lucie is now 18-14 on the second half of the season and 56-46 overall.



John Church got the spot start for the Mets and shut down the Cubs bats through five innings putting the Mets in position to get back into the win column. Pedro Zapata kicked things off for the Mets doubling in the first inning and scoring on a Jefry Marte ground out giving the Mets an early 1-0 lead. With the game tied 1-1, the Mets broke the game open scoring five times in the third inning. Zapata doubled to lead off the inning and scored on another Jefry Marte ground out followed by a Travis Ozga double to score Stefan Welch to put the Mets up 3-1. A fielding error by Cubs center fielder, Evan Crawford turned an RBI single by Cesar Puello into three runs as Ozga and Puello would both come around to score giving the Mets a 6-1 advantage. Puello would add a solo home run in the eighth inning to cap off the Mets scoring in the 7-2 win.


John Church got the win improving to 4-1. Church tossed five innings allowing only one run on five hits while walking one. The Mets had five starters with at least two hits on the night. Cesar Puello led the Mets offensively driving in three runs and scoring twice on two hits including his ninth home run of the season. Pedro Zapata doubled twice and scored twice. Juan Centeno added a three-hit game and Travis Ozga had an RBI and run scored in the win.



New York Mets ace, Johan Santana is scheduled to make his first rehab start for the St. Lucie Mets Thursday night at Digital Domain Park as the Mets and Daytona Cubs close out their four-game series. Recovering from a torn capsule in his left shoulder, Santana will be limited to 45 pitches in his first outing. The two-time Cy Young Award winner has posted a 40-25 record and 2.85 ERA in three years with the Mets.
