Mazzilli has spent four years chipping away at the
Huskies’ all-time hits lead. He’ll finish in the top three. His career batting
average is also a stout .340.
“He’s got the best swing I’ve ever coached,” said Penders.
Hitting has never really been a problem for Mazzilli. It seems he was born to swing the bat. The two areas he’s improved the most here at UConn are defense and leadership.
“I don’t want to be a one-dimensional player,” LJ said. “I never really was excited in the field defensively, but now every single ball that’s hit to me I’m excited to make the play.”

Jonathan Mayo - The son of former big leaguer Lee Mazzilli was selected in the ninth round of the 2012 Draft by the Twins, but he opted to go back to UConn for his senior season. He responded with a solid all-around season that could very well help his Draft status. Mazzilli has a solid swing with decent bat speed and projects to keep hitting for average at the next level. He's not a huge power guy, but he should run into a handful of home runs and could pile up the doubles. He's an excellent base runner who makes the most of his decent speed. Mazzilli has made progress on his defense and most feel he should be able to stay on the infield as an offensive-minded second baseman.
Jeff (Oakland, NJ) - LJ Mazzilli -- senior sign or an outside shot to be something at the MLB level?
Keith Law - Senior sign for me. I should explain that - a "senior sign" is a player who signs well below slot because he's a college senior and thus has no leverage, but who also doesn't project to have a big league role. So I don't think Mazzilli is a prospect.
