The Harrisburg Senators racked up 16 hits and cashed in on four Binghamton errors to slap the B-Mets with a 9-2 loss on Thursday night at Metro Bank Park. Tony Renda led the charge with a four-hit game, while three Senators pitchers no-hit the B-Mets over the final five innings in the rubber match.
The Senators used a misplay to crack the scoreboard in the first inning. With the bases loaded, Matt Skole sent a potential inning-ending double play ball to Josh Rodriguez. The second baseman made a clean toss to second, but Gavin Cecchini’s relay to first sailed over David Cooper’s head, allowing two runs to score.
Binghamton responded with a flourish to open the fourth inning against Harrisburg starter Dakota Bacus. Following a leadoff walk to David Cooper, Dustin Lawley scorched a double down the left-field line. Xorge Carrillo brought both home and tied the game by lining a single to right.
Binghamton’s sloppy defense burned them again in the fifth. With two aboard, the Senators executed a double steal. Carrillo’s throw to second skipped into center, prompting Derrick Robinson to come home. Center fielder Gilbert Gomez attempted to nab Tony Renda as he scampered to third, but his throw bounced past Lawley, allowing the runner to come home. Shawn Pleffner capped the inning with an RBI groundout.
The Senators earned all their offense in a three-run sixth against Adam Kolarek. After back-to-back singles by Ricky Hague and Derrick Robinson, Renda hooked a three-run homer inside the left-field foul pole, his first long ball since August 2013. The blast snapped Kolarek’s scoreless streak at 15 innings.
The B-Mets offense shut down after their two-run fourth inning. Carrillo’s RBI single proved to be their last hit of the game as they closed the contest hitless in their final 17 at-bats. Bacus capped his Double-A debut with two scoreless innings and Abel De Los Santos silenced Binghamton in the seventh and eighth. James Simmons closed the game with a perfect ninth.
Bacus (1-0) allowed two runs on five hits over six innings to earn the win. Cessa (3-3) was touched for five runs (four earned) on ten hits over 4-1/3 innings in his second straight defeat.
The B-Mets (22-18) open a Memorial Day Weekend four-game series against the Akron RubberDucks at NYSEG Stadiumon Friday at 7:05 PM. RHP Michael Fulmer takes the mound against RHP Will Roberts.
