The Binghamton Mets followed an 83-minute rain delay with four sixth inning runs, en route to 6-1 victory over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats Saturday afternoon at NYSEG Stadium. John Gant beat the Fisher Cats for the second time, while Adam Kolarek earned his first save in over 11 months, extending his scoreless streak to 14 innings.
John Anderson stifled the B-Mets through five innings, getting eight outs from the final eight batters he faced, before the rain delay ended his afternoon. Reliever Corey Burns entered and was ambushed with seven hits, surrendering four runs in the sixth. He allowed eight of the 10 batters he faced to reach base.
Like the two games prior, New Hampshire scored before Binghamton even came to bat. After getting the first out of his outing, John Gant allowed back-to-back base hits to put men on the corners. KC Hobson brought in the first run of the game on a groundout to second base. It began a string of eight outs from the next eight Fisher Cat batters for Gant.
Binghamton stranded a base runner in each of the first two innings before getting on the board in the third. The frame began with back-to-back singles against John Anderson, who later loaded the bases with a one out walk. Jayce Boyd bounced into a force out to bring across the B-Mets first run. Binghamton left two on in the inning and sent the minimum to the plate over the next two frames.
The skies then opened up, leading to New Hampshire’s bullpen. Burns allowed a triple to the first batter he faced, Josh Rodriguez, who was then singled in on a Jayce Boyd single to center field. Following another B-Met base hit, Aderlin Rodriguez drove in two more runs with a hit of his own to center field. The attack continued, as the next three B-Mets reached on Burke, two via a single and one on a walk. Jared King capped off the scoring with an RBI infield single, giving Binghamton the 5-1 lead.
The B-Mets added a run in the seventh, when Dustin Lawley stroked an RBI double to left field off Greg Burke.
John Gant (2-3) earned his second win against New Hampshire, allowing a run over six innings. In two starts against the Fisher Cats this season, Gant has allowed one run on eight hits over 13 total innings. Burns (2-3) picked up the loss, allowing four runs and seven hits in an inning of work. He has allowed multiple runs in his last three appearances against Binghamton.
Kolarek tossed three shutout innings, allowing one hit, for his first save of the year. It extended his scoreless streak to seven appearances and 14 innings.
The B-Mets (21-15) wrap up their series with the Fisher Cats Sunday afternoon, with a 1:05 PM first pitch at NYSEG Stadium. Binghamton RHP Seth Lugo (2-1, 2.45) gets the ball against LHP Matt Boyd (2-1, 1.21).
POSTGAME NOTES: New Hampshire has scored before their opponent in 19 of 35 games played… Aderlin Rodriguez extended his season-high hitting streak to eight games, driving in seven runs during that stretch…Binghamton has won back-to-back games, despite committing six total errors…It was the B-Mets largest margin of victory in the month of May.
