1998
The Mets trade Preston Wilson, Geoff Goetz, and Ed Yarnall to the Marlins for Mike Piazza. Florida had acquired the All-Star catcher last week from the Dodgers, along with Todd Zeile in exchange for Gary Sheffield, Bobby Bonilla, Charles Johnson, Jim Eisenreich, and Manuel Barrios.

1963: The all-time shortest managerial career ends after one game - a loss - when Eddie Yost, who replaced Mickey Vernon (14-26) as the Senators' pilot, is replaced by Gil Hodges. Hodges was acquired today from the Mets, who receive veteran Jimmy Piersall in return.

That's when he gets the news that he has been called up to the major league Mets. He hires a driver to take him to Citi Field and after a two-hour ride, arrives there in the 3rd inning. He gets lost on his way to the clubhouse and has to ask for directions. He finally meets his manager and teammates in the 5th. He is then sent to pinch-hit for Drew Gagnon in the bottom of the 8th and hits a three-run homer off Sean Doolittle of the Nationals, capping a six-run inning. The Mets win the game, 6 - 1.

Another fine Links article today, John.

Players ought to strike a deal and play. Why?

The virus is becoming less of a hindrance every day. In NYS, on its peak new hospitalization day about 6 weeks ago, nearly 3200 were hospitalized that day. Yesterday? Just 246, a 92% drop. And had they hospitalized COVID positive nursing home patients routinely back then, that daily number in April would have been 1000 higher, making it more like a 95% drop...and most of those 246 yesterday are probably from nursing homes. Concede on $$, on both sides, AND PLAY!

Don't come across as greedy this year - and sit out if you wish. Reminds me of the Accountemps commercial...employee calls in sick again...boss says, don't worry we have Bob...and goes on to say what a great worker he is. Lots of minor leaguers would jump at the chance to play big league ball.

The great Pujols (what an incredible first 10 seasons he had) was a 13th round pick by the Cardinals in 1999. Wonder who the Mets picked in the first 13 rounds? Maybe another article topic for me.

Other than Strawberry, none of the Mets' overall # 1 picks had a career fWar of 10 or higher.

Thanks Tom. Fran Healey used to tell the story on TV about how the Mets were in on Pujols but his agent said he wanted $250,000 to sign and the Mets passed. Later on I think Pujols denied the $250,000 part of the story.

Per Tracy Ringoslby, Baseball America: "He was told by several scouts he would be taken somewhere in the first five rounds, but it didn’t happen. The Mets indicated an interest in drafting him in the ninth round, but his agent scared them off...He received a $30,000 bonus and $30,000 for college, which was the stumbling block initially."

I remember going to Piazza's Mets debut back in 1998. It is still shown on Mets Classics.

I would train in N.Y. if I were them. The Florida numbers "look good", but Florida is one of the states that may be fudging their numbers.

Bob,

I also think that the Mets and Yankees may feel they can control the training area better as opposed to NYC right now. So even if Florida is bad, they may think their players will be able to be isolated better. Either way, hope they all are safe.

Every time I think things are safe...

My daughter came over two days ago for the firs time since the virus shut us down. She is a principal of an inner city school in Beaufort SC and works from home every day with her teachers on Zoom. Except on Wednesday.

On Wednesday's she, her office manager, and assistant principal, and a handful of teaches go to the school and hand out meals to families in the community.

Yesterday... her office manager and 'right hand man', tested positive.

The entire school has now been shut down and my daughter is in a 14 day quarantine.

Sorry to hear that Mack. Hoping fir the best.
