John From Albany – Mets Breakfast Links 5/9/2020

Good Morning, Pete Alonso takes a ride with Jim Breuer, a Shoeless Joe Jackson baseball card fetches some big dollars, and MLB to cut amateur draft from 40 rounds to 5.

All the news that’s fit to Link, Mets Links, MLB Links, Minor League Links, Asian Baseball Links, and This Day in Mets History.

ESPN.com: Sources: MLB shortens 2020 draft from 40 rounds to 5: “The agreement allows teams to delay signing bonuses, with a maximum of $100,000 to be paid within 30 days of a player signing, 50% of the remainder due July 1, 2021, and the leftover due July 1, 2022.

Owners have long sought a shorter draft in spite of general managers and player-development personnel arguing that the domestic draft offers the greatest amount of surplus value compared to cost. The cutting of the draft coincides with the proposed elimination of a quarter of minor league teams, a measure that has drawn significant criticism.”

Ernest Dove Metsminors.net: The Mets will make six picks, including a selection from the Philadelphia Phillies as compensation for losing Zack Wheeler.

Yahoo Sports: “The decision comes after weeks of discussion between MLB and the MLBPA during the league’s coronavirus shutdown. The union had previously agreed to the possibility of a draft as short as five rounds, but was pushing for a 10-round draft during talks. MLB’s draft usually consists of 40 rounds.”

Joel Sherman NY Post: “The agents believe that baseball operations departments very much wanted the 10-round draft, but that a bloc of owners wanted the financial savings — believed to average about $1 million per team — of a five-round draft as franchises deal with so much lost revenue inflicted by the coronavirus pandemic. Without an agreement with the union, the Commissioner’s Office implemented the five-round draft. Nevertheless, teams will be able to sign an unlimited number of undrafted players for the $20,000 maximum.”

Mike Puma NY Post: Seth Lugo’s wish to join Mets rotation could be granted.  “With Jacob deGrom and Steven Matz the only healthy Mets starting pitchers under contract or club control for 2021 — Noah Syndergaard is rehabbing from Tommy John surgery and expected to miss the early part of the season — Seth Lugo may finally get his wish next year and return to starting duty.”

Deesha Thosar NY Daily News: Mets slugger Pete Alonso is thinking about hitting a home run on his birthday — in December.

NY Post: R.A. Dickey had one of the more improbable Cy Young seasons ever.

SNY.TV: Was R.A. Dickey's Cy Young or Johan Santana's no-hitter the more surprising Mets 2012 feat?

Forbes.com: Why Alex Rodriguez And Jennifer Lopez Couldn’t Buy The New York Mets. “Why not? Rodriguez wanted to be the managing partner of the Mets while he and Lopez were going to put in only $50 million to buy the team. Rich guys like Wayne Rothbaum and Richard Tsai were never going to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in the Mets and turn the keys of the team over to Rodriguez.”

Last Word On Baseball: Handling the New York Mets Pitching in Shortened Season. “With the upcoming plan of potentially having occasional seven-inning games and double-headers in 2020, the New York Mets are going to need to figure out what to do with their pitching.  If Lugo can only throw one inning and needs a day off, they are better of starting him in the shortened games. He will likely also need to throw in-between starts during the week, which could allow the Mets to have him come in relief in between starts on a limited pitch count.”

NJ.com: MLB rumors: Will owners cancel 2020 season over money? “While logistics and health concerns should be the paramount obstacles for MLB and the MLBPA to work through to get back on the field amid the coronavirus pandemic, something else will be at play in a major way: Money.”

The Sporting News: The eight best active MLB players draftedin Rounds 6-10.  Includes these Mets: Jacob deGrom, No. 8 (Ninth round, Mets, 2010); Jeff McNeil, No. 49 (12th round, Mets, 2013);

I was going to write a post on the draft decisions made yesterday, but a shortened '5 round' (one paragraph) though about it will be in tomorrow mornings FWIW post.

Ernest, good job as always.

Non drafted players will get a max of $20,000? A clear sign indeed of hard times. Sorry, fellas.

If they are drafting and signing players in mid-June, where and when do they play?

Oh and baseball's best current player drafted in the 34th round? I'm guessing Seth Lugo. Nice pick, even nicer of Lugo to turn it into a great pick.
