John From Albany – Mets News and Breakfast Links 10/5/2020

Good Morning. Happy Birthday Brent Gaff and Rey Sanchez. More Mets rebuild advice for Mr. Cohen this time from Bill Madden and…the UK! And the ALDS begins today.

Section Links: Mets Links, MLB Links, and This Day in Mets History.

Mets Links:

Bill Madden NY Daily News: Disastrous Phillies, Angels, Rockies front offices cautionary tales for Steve Cohen’s Mets. “For in the past couple of years, as some of Cohen’s new MLB lodge brothers can attest, hiring these new wave general managers whose prime modus operandi is the emphasis of analytics over scouting, can result in less-than-desired results… the Phillies, who have failed to make the postseason and had only one .500 season in the five years, finally forced out Matt Klentak as their GM Saturday….where Klentak’s GM counterpart with Miami, Mike Hill, built an entire new bullpen from scratch, mostly from the scrap heap rejects of other teams — much of that the result of good scouting…Word around baseball was that Klentak had no relationship with his scouts and barely communicated with them.”

Franchise Sports.co.uk: Four Things the New York Mets must do this off Season.  “Fire Brodie Van Wagenen; Boost the Analytics department; Extend Conforto; Sign a big Free Agent.”

SNY.TV: Mets infielder Andres Gimenez turned in an elite defensive season in 2020. Advanced metrics show just how impressive the shortstop's rookie season was. MLB.com and its Statcast technology introduced the “Outs Above Average” measurement for infielders this season…Using that formula, Gimenez’s OAA of five is tied for the highest infield among all rookie infielders, with Cubs infielder Nico Hoerner. In fact, only Fernando Tatis Jr. and Francisco Lindor measured higher among all shortstops.”

SNY.TV: Potential Mets' target Trevor Bauer says he 'will consider all offers' this offseason. Bauer is in the final year of a $17.5 million deal with the Cincinnati Reds.

Philly Netro.us: Hopes of re-signing JT Realmuto growing dimmer for Phillies - Metro Philadelphia.

amNY: Phillies owner’s JT Realmuto comments bodes well for Mets. “Can you tell me what the governor and the mayor of Philadelphia are going to allow us to have next year in the way of fans?” [Phillies Owner John] Middleton said Saturday. “Because if you do, you know something that I don’t. So I have no idea what we’re going to be allowed. Obviously, that will determine our revenues, and revenues determine what you can do and what you can’t do.”

SNY.tv: Should Luis Rojas return as manager in 2021? Mets sources weigh in. Former Mets exec Adam Fisher: “He proved he’s up to the task, especially when you look at everything he had to deal with: stepping in for Beltran, the pandemic, a 60-game season, pitching problems. I don’t know how anyone evaluating him would say he shouldn’t at least get the chance to manage a full season."

Brian Joura Mets360.com: Seth Lugo and his trouble early in games. Brian points out this about Seth last year – “Seven starts and a 6.15 ERA is dreadful, especially from a guy who hasn’t been bashful about wanting to start.” He also gives a tremendous breakdown of Seth in different parts of the game and thinks he may deserve another shot at starting next year.

Mike’s Mets: Where Did We Go Wrong?

Mike Silva Talkin' Mets - 2020 Mets Wrap Up. Mike Silva is joined by Justin Toscano of The Record as they wrap up the 2020 Mets season.

Rising Apple: NY Mets should trust Edwin Diaz with closer duties in 2021.

Rising Apple: Why we shouldn’t worry about Pete Alonso yet. “Alonso currently [2020] has just a .242 BABIP. The balls he is putting in play, are finding gloves. Last season [2019], his BABIP was .280. The league average for BABIP is around .300.”

Rising Apple: Mets should make Salvador Perez part of a contingency plan at catcher.

Rising Apple: Rick Reed has the second-highest winning percentage. Dwight Gooden is number one with .649; Rick Reed .621; Tom Seaver is third with a .615.

Rising Apple: New York Mets: Five failed Mets reunions with former players. Jason Bay, Bobby Bonilla, Jay Bruce, Jonathan Niese, and Jose Reyes are the picks.

Rising Apple: NL East rivals worth adding to the roster this winter. No Surprise: J.T. Realmuto leads the list that includes Marlins and Braves bullpen pieces and Nationals catcher Kurt Suzuki.

Joel Sherman NY Post: Steve Cohen sets Mets up for J.T. Realmuto, George Springer and Trevor Bauer chase.

How about Kris Bryant for JD Davis straight up? Sounds nuts at first, except (without looking up the numbers) JDD salary-wise is much cheaper and could thrive in Chicago's smaller park.

If baseball is a bottom line $$ sport, it might intrigue the Cubs.

Tom,

One thing about Kris Bryant is that he is a Scott Boras client and will surely hit the free agent market in 2022 when he can. So you'll be getting him for two years. According to Baseball Reference his 162 game average is 31 HR, 91 RBI, .280 BA. This last year in 34 games - 4 HR - 11 RBI - .206 BA. He is not a +3B defender. His career RDS at 3B -14! That is a -3 average. I would be hesitant to pull the trigger on that one.

It’s ironic that Alonso’s BABIP is so low because strikeouts don’t count in that stat, but neither do HR’s. I still maintain that he can be a complete hitter like Miguel Cabrera if he learns his strike zone, but that takes focus that right now is going towards causes of all sorts. Those “causes” are also robbing him of time to work on his defense.
