Binghamton - Ponies Ninth Inning Rally Falls Short Against Ducks

BINGHAMTON, NY – The Binghamton Rumble Ponies made a furious rally in the ninth with five runs but fell short 8-7 to the Akron RubberDucks Tuesday night at Rumbletown Stadium in the first game of a seven-game series.

Akron (13-5) got off to a fast start with a three-run first highlighted by an Oscar Gonzalez 2-run homer, his fourth against Binghamton (2-16) this year. Binghamton would plate runs in the first and fifth to cut the lead to one, but Akron put together a 4-run sixth inning that made it 7-2.

Trailing 8-2 with the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth, Carlos Cortes lined a two-run single to left. The next batter Jake Mangum took the first pitch from Akron RHP Alec Wisely over the right center field wall for a three-run homer to cut the deficit to one. Nick Mikolajchak came in the game for Akron and struck out Jeremy Vasquez looking to end the game and earn the save.

It is the fifth game in the last six Ponies losses that has been decided by one run. Tony Dibrell (0-1) took the loss allowing 3 runs on 5 hits over 4 innings, with 4 walks and 3 strikeouts.
