Mack's Top Draft Prospects - #20 - RHP - Andrew Painter

Andrew Painter

Mack's spin -

Painer was an early pick of mine for the Mets at 1.10, but his less than dominating results so far in his senior year has pushed him back a little in the first round.

RHP      6-6      220      Calvary Christian Acamedy (FL)

5-20-21 - mlb

16. Marlins: Andrew Painter, RHP, Calvary Christian Academy (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.)

Painter has size and stuff, even if he hasn’t been truly dominant this spring, and who doesn’t love a local kid goes to the local team story?

5-6-21 - MLB - 5-6 Mock Draft-

18. Cardinals: Andrew Painter, RHP, Calvary Christian Academy (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.)

Though he hasn't dominated as much as hoped, Painter is still a projectable 6-foot-6 right-hander with feel for four pitches.

22. Chicago White Sox: Andrew Painter, RHP, Calvary Christian (Fla.) Academy

Painter has a notable 6-foot-6, 210-pound frame and repeats his low-effort delivery well. He has a fastball that sits in the mid-90s and shows a solid feel for his changeup, curveball, and slider. He entered the spring as the top prep arm in the 2021 MLB draft class but hasn’t always dominated hitters like scouts hoped to see.

16) Marlins: Andrew Painter, RHP, Calvary Christian Academy (Fla.)

Painter hasn’t dominated as much as some would have liked to see, but he’s still 6-foot-6 with good stuff and feel for pitching. Plus, who doesn’t love the hometown-team-drafting-you storyline?

4-23-21 - Perfect Game Florida @Florida_PG

Andy Painter looking great tonight. 93-96 with ride, slider showing big as his out-pitch and flashing some really good change-ups. Big stuff from one of the top prep arms in the country

Tyler Russo @TRussoPG

Big start for Andy Painter tonight as he went six no-hit innings and struck out 13. Held mid-90s for the outing, picked up a bunch of Ks with the breaker and turned over a handful of crazy good changeups that play big off the fastball. First-round talent come July.

4-22-21 - pipeline podcast mock -

12) Mariners (Mayo): Andrew Painter, RHP, Calvary Christian Academy (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) -- Some might see this as a reach, but I like high school guys with size (he’s 6-foot-6), good stuff and a feel for pitching.

4-19-21 - TTF - Mock 2.0 -

18. St. Louis Cardinals: Andrew Painter, RHP, Calvary Christina HS (FL)

So many mocks have Painter in the 10-20 selection range, which is probably where he’ll be selected, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he rises to the top-10. Painter is 6’6″ and is one of the most athletic pitchers in this year’s crop. It also can be said it’s a weaker pitching class after Rocker and Leiter, so Painter could slide just about anywhere in the front half of the first round.

4-7-21 - Fish Stripes -

RHP Andrew Painter’s fastball sits in the mid-90s and even topped out at 100 mph a couple weeks ago. His changeup and curveball are his best two secondary pitches. Painter also possess a mid-80s slider that’s still developing. Painter also has a very smooth delivery and is able to repeat mechanics extremely well.

Strengths

Tremendous size

Power arm

Four-pitch mix

Athletic with good mechanics

Very repeatable delivery

Advanced feel for pitching

Arguably best H.S. pitcher in country

Could move quickly through minor league system

37. RHP Andrew Painter | School: Calvary Christian Academy HS, FL | Commit: Florida | B / T: R / R | Ht: 6’7 | Wt: 230 | Age: 18

Painter, stands 6’7 with easy and repeatable mechanics, command of a 4 pitch mix all grading Above-Average or better. His Plus Fastball sits 93-95 T97, 2300-2500 RPM, that he can command to both sides of the plate. Features 2 Breaking balls, the Slider being the better of the 2 at this stage grading as Plus, however each show Above-Average spin rates that he can use as weapons vs either LHH or RHH that get a high amount of swing and miss and a Changeup that flashes Plus at its best and works so well off the Fastball. Similar to Adam Wainwright.

3. Andrew Painter, RHP, Calvary Christian Academy, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Painter, a Florida signee, gets to his 90-95 mph velo range easily, and he spins two different breaking balls that both show plenty of promise.

2-27-21 - top hs players -

Andrew Painter – Painter doesn’t offer anything elite right now, but he has just about everything a team could want in a prep pitcher. He’s big and athletic with room to grow, his fastball sits in the low-to-mid 90s, he has feel for a slider, curveball, and changeup, and he has a track record of throwing strikes.

3 Andrew Painter

6-7  230  R/R RHP Pompano Beach, FL Florida Calvary Christian Academy

Up to 94 mph at PG Junior National, controls delivery well & fills the zone; fastball jumps and more to come, feel for CB & SL. Up to 96 at the PG National with a 4-pitch mix and still has projection to go along with his current polish.

2-16-21 - Doug @FTLO_Baseball

Is Andrew Painter really the best prep arm? Haven't seen his FB metrics but it seems with his height and delivery he's going to have a steep approach angle and be a ground ball machine at the big league level more than a true bat misser.

2-15-21 - CBS - Top 50 -

10. Andrew Painter, RHP, Calvary Christian HS (FL)

Painter, a Florida commit, possesses many of the attributes teams desire. He's listed at a projectable 6-foot-7, 230 pounds, and he has a history of throwing strikes with a varied repertoire, including a heater that can touch into the mid-90s and a promising curveball. As with the average high-school arm, his future employer will have to work with him on his mechanics. Painter has a steep, high three-quarters release point generated in part from a short stride that results in just six feet of extension on his pitches. This isn't geometry class, but there's obvious value in releasing closer to the plate, even if you aren't, say, Tyler Glasnow, who essentially hands the ball to the catcher.

Areas To Improve: Be the same pitcher last summer this spring over more innings

Of all the players on this list, Painter might be the toughest to find a true area of weakness to suss out. He’s a complete prep pitching prospect that checks most boxes scouts want to see with a projectable frame, loose and easy arm action, four-pitch mix and potential for above-average control. Since “be lefthanded” isn’t really an option, we’ll instead say that Painter needs to go out this spring and simply be the same pitcher he was last summer, but over more innings. If he can increase the power of his breaking balls, that would be a cherry on top.
