Get to know: Johneshwy Fargas

The Mets plan to announce today that they have called up: Johneshwy Fargas

Background, Stats, Videos.

Background: Outfielder, Bats Right, Throws Right, DOB 12/15/1994, Drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the 11th round, Pick: 26, Overall: 342, of the 2013 MLB June Amateur Draft from Puerto Rico Baseball Academy (Gurabo, Puerto Rico).  Signed by the New York Mets as a Minor League Free agent on January 9, 2020; invited him to 2021 spring training on November 4, 2020.

Maybe it is because “Chicks dig the long ball but dudes love speed” as Brian Joura of Mets360 says but I like players like Johneshwy.

He has speed as evidenced by his 50 stolen bases in the Double A Eastern League in 2019 and 47 the year before that in Single A.  After 7 years in the SF Giants minor league system, the Mets signed him before the 2020 season.  Unfortunately, no 2020 minor league season did not give us the chance to see him play in Syracuse and Binghamton.  He did show a good glove during the 2020 spring training and hit for the cycle one ca,e.

Per Baseball Savant, he sprays the ball all around the diamond while pulling his homers.

He just turned 26 this last December. He has been playing CF and RF for the team in Puerto Rico this winter - and as we had on the Breakfast Links and reported on the Brooklyn Trolley Blogger, “was voted this season's LBPRC's Most Valuable Player unanimously.  He hit .349 with six doubles in sixteen regular-season games, four home runs with 17 runs batted in, and a .434 OBP.”

I think he could be a viable option as backup outfielder this year on the Mets.  Most likely he will start the year in Syracuse or Binghamton as a depth piece should there be an injury in Flushing.

Good for Johneshwy. Long journey to get here. May his stay be long as well.

He could change his name slightly to Johnny Fargo and have a name that sounds like a cowboy.
