The Mack Report - Thursday, June 9th

Today’s featured Mets minor leaguer is someone that I promised Tom Brennan that I would take a deeper look at.
Don’t you know the young dude hits his 8th home run last night as a proper into.

St. Lucie outfielder, Omar De Los Santos, is a 6-1, 205 past 2019 IDFA, out of the Dominican Republic.

He is known for his speed and power was projected for him when the Mets signed him. He played 2019 for the two DSL teams (219-AB, .274, 13-SB, 4-HR, 42-K), sat out 2020 due to COVID restrictions, and played for both the FCL-Mets (28-AB, .429) and St. Lucie (133-AB, .241-AB, 12-SB, 0-HR, 50-K) last season.

Thus year, so far for St. Lucie, he is hitting .281, with 8-HR, and 23-SB.

However, his strikeout rate remains high with a whopping 66 in 171-AB.

Does Omar have the chops to make it to Flushing? Well, only if he cuts down his K/9% in half. Still, there is some emerging talent here with his bat and we need to keep an eye on him.

Texas Gus asked me to come up with a list of the top 10 hitters and pitchers that could still be available to us when we pick at 1.11 and 1.14.

Today I will start with five of the hitters. Over the next three reports, I will post five more hitters, five pitchers, and five more pitchers.

First, there are seven bats that simply are not going to left on the board when we start picking. They are:

Age At Draft: 20.9

One of the best players in the PAC in 2021.

Some loft in his swings, as evidenced by his 18 homers last season.

Patient hitter.

Plus runner with natural instincts on the base paths.

Projects in the corner.

Mack's thoughts - I don't think Berry will be around my 1.11, so I don't have to make a decision on him. Nor do I think Susac will either. He's a definite top 10 pick right now. As for bat vs. pitcher, picked the best player, but understand that the top bats in this draft will run out in the 15 range, while top pitchers will go deep into the 4th round.

My pick at 1.11 would be DeLauter.

NEWS: The Mets have signed OF Terrance Gore to a minor league deal.

Note: Gore is a three time World Series Champion

Deesha (@DeeshaThosar)

In this story I wrote yesterday, before Alonso & Marte went down, was a bit surprised to learn Mets starters have a 4.84 ERA since Max Scherzer went on the IL. In that time, Mets gained ground in the standings.

Maybe, just maybe, the “sky’s not falling.”

Time to start drooling - draft time is coming.

Omar De los Santos suddenly stopped stealing - don't stop stealing - stop fanning. Nice power so far.

The graveyard for minors players who strike out too much is about the size of Montana. I hope they are really working with tases guys to fan less.

That's why it sometimes feels cruel to keep posting Jaylen Palmer's bad K #s. Forget discouraging him - if he doesn't change soon, he'll be gone. That is the ultimate discouragement.

Palmer now has 82 games in High A...a .177 average, 40 walks (good), but 130 Ks in 279 official at bats - way beyond bad. His goal every time up should not be walks - it should be contact. If it is a strike, swing. Choke up on 2 strikes. No contact, no future.

Coaches said Omar de los Santos is not done "figuring it out" yet. Can be said of course about tons of prospects but rooting for him to further develop and put it all together.

Tom Brennan said...

Ernest, Omar has figured a lot out this year. Hopefully he figures the rest out soon. I am curious - what do the coaches say about Junior Tilien?

Thanks Dove.

I knew you would add to this

Got any suggestions as to who I should.feature in the Mack Report?

Thanks for all the work Mack. My question was trying to figure out who is left for #11 and #14, so my question was to identify the top 10 players to kind of work from there. I apologize for not being clear.

I truly believe Susac goes before the Mets for the same reason Henry Ford went last year: catchers that can hit don’t exist. I would put him way before the Mets. Also, I would like a rare hitting talent like Berry to fall, but…. Can you take both if they’re available?

If either is gone, like I wrote yesterday, Lesko and Prielipp are next on my wish list or realistically available players. That was my thinking before reading your piece today, now I’ll take time to read it and form another thought.

1. The other 5 bats will on tomorrow.

There will be no post on Saturday due to daughtern being operated on

First 5 pitchers on Sunday

Next 5 on Monday

2. Everybody panics after the first catcher is picked.

There.are only 2 great ones in this draft.

Kevin Parada will go early and I expect Susac to closely follow.

Mack Ade said...

3. Berry may go early but I expect him to be around.

He really is playing more at.first this season.

Mack Ade said...

I never recommend drafting by position but you have to dive into very talented and deep pitching pool.

The fact is that the majority of top starters in this draft have been injured.

TexasGusCC said...

The depth of the pitcher pool is my reason for looking at only special players: Susac is a strong two way catcher. He will not make it out of the single digits. Berry is a great bat, with no questions unlike most other guys. Yes, his glove is a decoration.

After those two and the five six guys guaranteed to go before the Mets, I would only take ace stuff pitchers, as many as I can get - injured is not if consequence. I’m not passing on aces to take DeLauter who hasn’t hit elite pitching. Nor am I taking any other outfielder or hitting prospect outside the top eight.

I'd love to get Susac and Lesko in the first round. The guy I'm hoping to get with their third pick is LHP Noah Schultz, but not sure he'll last to #52
