 2023 Season Predictions

The season starts on Thursday. The time has finally come. I am so pumped to get started and see what the Mets have in store for us. I wanted to give some official predictions for the upcoming season.

Let’s start with division rankings.

NL East:

Braves

Mets

Phillies

Marlins

Nationals

This one was not that hard, unfortunately. The Braves have one of, if not the deepest lineup in baseball. They lost Swanson, but now have a totally healthy Acuna and newly acquired Sean Murphy. The Mets won 101 games last year and will likely regress a bit but are still good for 94+ wins. I have the Phillies pegged at 92 wins and a 3rd place finish. The Marlins are better than the Nationals. The Nationals may be the worst team in baseball.

NL Central:

Cardinals

Brewers

Cubs

Pirates

Reds

The top 2 in this division were pretty close for me. The Cards won the division by 7 games last year, but the Brewers are a solid team. I am high on the Cardinals this year and have them winning the NL Central. The Cubs made improvements this off season and will comfortably take third place. The Pirates young core is on the up and will outplay the Reds who don’t seem to know which way is up.

NL West:

Padres

Dodgers

Giants

Diamondbacks

Rockies

Yes, I have the Padres over the Dodgers. I have the Padres as the favorites to win it all. The Dodgers got much worse as they are saving up to (successfully) get Ohtani. The Giants will be average once again. The Dbacks are sneaky solid. Leaving the Rockies in the basement once again.

AL East:

Yankees

Rays

Blue Jays

Orioles

Red Sox

The Yankees got better this offseason by adding Rodon and Anthony Volpe coming up is exciting. The Rays will be the Rays and cause issues for everyone with players you have never heard of. The Blue Jays may have the most talent and the biggest upside of any team in this division, but I have the Yankees and Rays beating them out. The Orioles are fun to watch and could be competitive this year. The Red Sox are a mystery. Nobody seems to know what they are doing so they will be last.

AL Central:
Guardians

White Sox

Twins

Royals

Tigers

The Guardians are a talented and scrappy bunch. Their rotation is going to be solid, even with Tristan McKenzie’s injury. The White Sox are super talented but their guys cannot stay healthy, so I have them at two. The Twins are solid and will be average, so I have them at third. The Royals are also fun and have some upside in their rotation. The Tigers have some young guys but are not good enough to beat out the Royals.

AL West:

Astros

Mariners

Angels

Rangers

Athletics

The Astros are World Series champs, enough said. The Mariners are very good and a ton of fun to watch. They will ride Julio to another playoff berth. The Angels HAVE to make the playoffs this year for Mike Trout’s sake. He got a taste of playoff baseball in the WBC and wants that in MLB. Unfortunately, they aren’t good enough to do so. Despite the Rangers gearing up with DeGrom, I don’t see them making any real noise. The Athletics may be the worst team in baseball.

Playoff Predictions

Division Winners NL:

Cardinals

Padres

Wild Cards:

Mets

Phillies

Dodgers

Division Winners AL:

Yankees

Guardians

Astros

Wild Cards:
Rays

Blue Jays

World Series Winner:

Padres

Great job on the entire league.

Nice recap. I think without Edwin, low 90s in wins may be the cap.

Edwin's loss will cost us 8 to 10 wins in my opinion so 90-92 is realistic as getting into the post season is most important and we should do that. Look the Diaz loss is huge and not having him for the post season means maybe we win 1 series but for Uncle Steve's $$$ we cannot overstate ED's loss WBC be dammed. As a fan major league players should be banned but if they insist on going and get hurt they forfeit their salary (but I know I dreaming here) but it really ticks me off to know it will cost us 8 to 10 games before the season even starts. Sorry had to vent.

Outstanding analysis

Gary the only way your prediction is wrong is luck - or a trade for a closer. Last year, if the Mets had this pen, maybe they win 88, not 101.

In the interest of maintaining my title of resident optimist (or "RO"), I still predict 100+ Ws, but out of respect for Edwin I'm only expecting 102.
And keep your eyes on Drew Smith, my pick for Rising Star.

Some bad news (if verified), especially for Tom. NJ.com reports that Bryce MdO's injury is worse than originally thought. Instead of "stress reaction", the diagnosis is bone chips, which will require surgery and likely 4 months out of action.

The only reasonably good news is that he will be moved to the 60-day IL, thus opening a slot on the 40-man for a new acquisition.

Bill, Oca chips surgery sucks. Maybe it will help his control.

The guy throws too hard. Look at how many games and seasons he’s lost. Doubt we we ever see him at Citi Field again.
