What camp taught us about every guy on the roster - The Catchers

Tim Britton and Will Sammon - 40 Mets, 40 observations: What camp taught us about every guy on the roster -

Catchers

Omar Narváez: With the thought that it could be his final opportunity, Narváez jumped at the chance of playing in the World Baseball Classic. He said his remaining goal is to play in a World Series. But the tradeoff was less time with the pitching staff. Still, it’s a veteran staff and Narváez is an experienced backstop. Also, he arrived a couple of weeks early to prevent a minor concern from becoming a major issue.

Tomás Nido: After spending more time with hitting coach Jeremy Barnes, Nido made some small mechanical adjustments at the plate, which could result in harder contact. During the spring, he hit three home runs, tying his total from last season.

Francisco Álvarez: According to evaluators, Álvarez has room to grow behind the plate with his receiving, hands and footwork. Álvarez slumped in the spring, but he has hit at every level of the minors. It wouldn’t be surprising if the Mets had Álvarez linger in Triple A for a while to gain more seasoning on defense.

I am more and more convinced that the Mets, burdened by lux taxes, want our hitting prospects to arrive fully ripe before adding any more time to their arbitration and free agent clocks.

Of course, they could also be used to acquire a Pirate named Bednar. It helps they are earning minimum wage. Maybe Oca and Vientos? Throw in a Ziegler?

You can't catch two catchers at the same time

Rookies don't make for good DH hitters

Drafting Parada was best player available

Trading either him.or Alvarez for need player is ok in my book

I think it would have to be high need. So, if we traded for Bednar, who is very good, I would also want a very good prospect in baseball’s top 100. Parada maybe straight up, since he is further behind Alvarez in terms of readiness.

I want to see that Syracuse line up averaging 7 runs per game.

You don’t trade elite prospects for relief pitchers. Relief pitchers only pitch 60-70 innings a year, are very volatile from year to year and every yer closers show up from nowhere.
