5. Carson Montgomery – The big right hander out of Florida State has a pitch mix that eerily shadows the aforementioned Kuehler with the mid to upper 90s fastball and mid 80s slider. However, Montgomery is not nearly as polished, but he could be even better as it’s just a matter of Montgomery gaining control and command. There was word he adjusted his delivery. We shall see how that works out. Montgomery is only going to be 20 years old at the time of the draft just like Cade Horton was this year. How Montgomery looks in the first couple of starts could give us an inkling of whether or not the Cubs might be interested. Then again, as we saw last year with Horton, once a guy figures some things out, they can take off really fast.

The Seminoles remain well stocked with power arms, headlined by three high-end talents in lefthander Wyatt Crowell and righties Carson Montgomery and Jackson Baumeister, all of whom have Day One draft potential.
Montgomery, another Team USA pitcher this summer, was the top prep pitching prospect to attend college two years ago, but he’s had an uneven first two years, posting a 4.50 ERA as a freshman and a 5.00 ERA as a sophomore. For Florida State to make a serious run this year, it needs Montgomery to blossom into a bona fide ace, pure and simple. And he’s certainly capable of doing it. In my fall visit, he showed a quality four-pitch arsenal as usual, working at 93-96 with a good short cutter at 90-91, an inconsistent but promising slider at 82-84 with tight spin in the 2700 rpm range, and a useful changeup at 87. Physically and stuff-wise, he sure looks the part. Now it’s just a matter of putting it all together.

27. Carson Montgomery, RHP, Florida State – With a repeatable lower 3/4 delivery and solid build, there is little doubt Montgomery looks like a starting pitcher, but consistency and in-game results remain the two big stepping stones. In terms of pure stuff, Montgomery has it, with a fastball in the mid-90s and two versions of a slider, one a two-plane breaker, one more cutterish, and a quality change. Despite plus stuff, he has found himself relegated to mid-week starter duties for Florida State and has a career ERA of 4.83 with the Seminoles. There might not be a bigger gap between stuff and results in the draft right now, so how he performs this season will be incredibly important.

Montgomery has been a first round talent since the 2020 draft and some scouts have gone on record regretting not pushing harder for their team to dole out the cash necessary to land the talented righty. It might be the best breaking ball in the class right now, a slider into the mid-80s with strong spin rates, and serious feel for two-plane break. The result is opposing hitters swinging through air nearly two-thirds of their hacks. Montgomery can get into the upper-90s with the fastball, though he's generally a few ticks lower than that. It's not a bat-missing fastball and he'll need to continue working on developing consistent shape with the heater. Still, given the velocity, the floor of the pitch, especially at the college level, it's reasonably high. There's some feel for a pretty darn good changeup in there too. Montgomery could be the complete package and projects to fit comfortably inside the first round.

2022: 4-1, 5.00 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, 62/23 K/BB in 54 innings.
For all the fanfare that followed Jackson Baumeister to Tallahassee, Carson Montgomery was an even bigger prospect as a prep that ranked as the top prospect on my list to reach campus (though #'s 2 and 4, Kevin Parada and Dylan Crews, have since surpassed him in a big way), though like Baumeister, he's yet to break out. Though Montgomery graduated in 2020 and Baumeister was a 2021, he's actually more than a month younger as he's extremely young for his class and Baumeister is very old, interestingly enough. He sits in the low to mid 90's with his fastball and can run it up to 98, though it plays down a touch and catches a lot of barrels in the zone because of its generic movement. By far his best pitch is a plus slider with huge spin rates that misses a ton of bats, and pro teams will likely have him pitch off of it in the minors. He also flips in an average changeup, rounding out a big league three pitch arsenal. He's athletic on the mound but does have an interesting double leg lift that impacts his break towards the plate, and to this point his control is well ahead of his command. For most pitchers who can hit 98 and add a nasty breaking ball, that's not so much of an issue anymore, but given Montgomery's fastball's tendency to find more barrels than it misses, it's certainly important for him. If he can get better about locating his prodigious stuff or finds a way to get more movement on his fastball, he can be an impact starting pitcher at the big league level. Given his youth, not turning 21 until after the draft, there's a solid chance that happens.
