SPOTRAC’s Michael Ginnitti a month ago estimated the following contractual and destination-related outcome for Big Pete:
“Conventional 1st Base thinking says he plays out his $22M salary for 2024, then takes on another 8 years, $225M for the remainder of his career.
“We’ll….predict a larger than normal number, where the Mets buy out his final year of arbitration, converting that price tag into a signing bonus, finalizing a total contract at $30M per year.”
“9 years, $270M from 2024-2032, including a $22M signing bonus.”
What do you Mack’s Mets experts think of this?

Offer him 5/$132MM and if he says no, then start making calls. There is a whole roster to fill in and the Mets don’t have elite pitching. How many $30+ contracts do they need to finish third or fourth? Make calls.

I like the 9 years, $270MM suggested by the writer. Boras will shoot for more. I am pessimistic. At least make some market assessment and calls.

This numbers are usually for players with 8-10 WAR. Alonso is consistently in the middle 4’s.
6 yrs/170M. Possibly an option 7th year. Or if they can include this year, I would go to 7 yrs/200M.
If they can't do that now or if Boras is ridiculous then I would seriously listen to all offers. I would go to the Cubs and get Pete Crow Armstong back.
I am a proponent of keeping Pete around for his entire career. However, I am not sure we are seeing things clearly. After the home runs and RBIs, there is a major drop off in his stat sheet.
In comparing Freddie Freeman and Pete Alonso, Alonso tends to hit more homers and drive in a few more runs (which is also a function of the hitters around him), but Freeman is a lot better overall hitter AND a better fielder. He signed a 6 year $27M per year contract with the Dodgers two years ago. There is no way Pete should be getting $30M per year for 9 years. He should be pretty happy with a $150M 6 year deal. If you prefer to lock him up through the end of his career, go 9 years $225. He is not a $30M player - he does one thing very well - hit home runs, everyhing else is average at best.
I’m along the same lines as Joe P although Boras will want him as the highest paid 1B. So have to be a minimum of 7 years $210. I’m all for upping that to 7 years $230 to get a deal done but I don’t want to go to 8 years. Ohtani and Soto are $40+ M a year players. Pete is not.
If Pete and Boras don’t take it trade him this Winter. Maximize the deal now then at the Trade Deadline. Stearns can’t let Boras control the situation. Also if the Cubs want him I don’t want PCA. We need SP prospects so I want Horton and Ferris. Even if we have to add in a secondary SP prospect to get those two prospects.
I agree with Remember1969. Freeman is getting $27M/yr and Matt Olsen got 8 years $168M ($21M/Yr) and Goldschmidt signed a 5 year $130M deal ($26M/yr). They are all better all around players compared to Pete. I would go to 8 years $200M or the same 6 year $162M deal that Freddie signed. If Boras wants more I would trade him and then try to trade for Soto or sign Ohtani.
Tell that to Boras. Boras has basically said he expects Pete to be the highest paid 1B. Boras will say the market is so much different then 2 years ago and pull out every BS stat why Pete is better then Freeman (even though he isn’t). Your points are valid and I’m with you but someone will give him and Boras the $30 M they want. Stearns needs to make his best offer this Winter and if they don’t take it trade him.
First of all I never want a Met for life. There is zero to gain from having an old washed up player wear a uniform for nostalgia purposes. piazza is a Met, Seaver is a Met, degrom, Darryl, Wright the list goes on.
The fact that they end their career some where else doesn’t take away anything.
So I always say trade them or let them go too soon than too late.
With that said I offer 27 million for 7 years (including this year)
If he doesn’t want it then trade him PERIOD.
Use those assets we acquired because we are not giving it away and trade for Luis Robert’s and Dylan cease
There is no time for sentimental feelings in business and for all those Pete HR’s we have lost way more than we have won.
He is no Miguel Cabrera as a player and look how badly he turned out.

To put in perspective Alonso’s OFFENSIVE WAR - OFFENSE ONLY - Alonso was 42nd in productivity in MLB. Lindor was 17th and Nimmo was 23rd. Look for yourselves, it’s in Fanagraphs.

One Met for life died today: Ron Hodges, a catcher who spent his entire 12-season major league career with the New York Mets, died Friday. He was 74.
Hodges died at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital after a short illness, Mets spokesman Jay Horwitz said.
Selected by the Mets in the second round of the second phase of the January 1972 amateur draft, Hodges finished with a .240 batting average, 19 homers and 147 RBIs during a big league career from 1973-84.
Hodges had a .342 on-base percentage with 224 walks and 217 strikeouts.
I’d like to keep Pete, but the money part of the game is so inflated, I am open to the best move for the team. EVERYONE, virtually, declines in their 30s. Sadly for him he was 24 years, 4 months when he debuted. Late arrival.
Ball on the wall Ron Hodges. I remember the play well and lead to a very improbable run to the WS and I'll always wonder what could have been with even an avg front office and no M. Donald Grunt interference.

The heart says pay Pete, the brain says don't. If he wants AAV, meaning over $30 mil per, it needs to be max 5 years.
Let alonso walk and give that money to Soto next year.

Freeman signed in 2022 for 6 years/$162M. If Boras wants Pete to be the best paid, give him $174M for 6 years. Freeman is a better overall baseball player, but Alonso is the best the Mets can hope for at that position. So since every year brings another one-upper, let Pete have his day. Six years from now his numbers will be down and it will be time to make the hard decision on whether he will be a lifetime Met. Until then, let's wear out that Apple!!
