One of
the most impressive underclassmen on the showcase circuit and with the U.S. 18-and-under
team in 2023, James looked like a slam-dunk first-rounder for 2025. That's now
not the case after he struggled last summer at the plate and lost some
quickness. He put on one of the best batting practice displays at the East
Coast Pro Showcase in August, then went 1-for-12 with six strikeouts in game
action.
James has
gained some weight in the last year, adding strength but losing athleticism.
His right-handed stroke doesn't look as smooth as it once did, and his swing
decisions have regressed as well. He still shows 20-homer power but he's
selling out more to get to it.
James now
has fringy-to-average speed and isn't as dynamic on the bases or at shortstop.
He still has good actions, reliable hands and a strong arm but he's covering
less ground. He doesn't have much projection remaining in his 6-foot frame and
may not go high enough to entice him away from his University of Mississippi
commitment.

28. Coy James – SS
HT/WT: 6’0/188 | Bat/Throw: R/R | School: Davie County (NC) |
Commitment: Mississippi | Age: 18.4
James is one of the more potent offensive profiles in this
draft class.
A potential leadoff sparkplug type of bat, James has torched
opposing pitching this summer, including a record performance at 17U WWBA in
Georgia, where he set a record with 22 hits throughout the tournament.
James is an aggressive hitter who expands the zone at a high
clip, but he’s able to get the barrel to the ball consistently. It’s very quick
hands with power that presently plays to the gaps, though there’s been some
inconsistencies with his pure contact.
Strikeouts were a concern this summer and he seldom takes
walks. With that said, if James can limit the strikeouts and shore up the
contact, he has the pedigree to find his way back up draft boards. His power
has upticked over the past calendar year and it projects as average or better.
There’s a solid chance he can stick at shortstop, as he’s shown off great range, smooth actions, and a sound internal clock at the position. In the off chance that he moves off the position, he’ll likely end up at second base, though he’s gotten some run in center field this summer. If James makes it to Oxford, he’ll be eligible as a junior in 2028.

2022
Sophomore National Showcase (2025 Grads)
Coy James
is a 2025 SS/RHP/2B with a 6-0 175 lb. frame from Advance, NC who attends Davie
County. Medium athletic build with good present strength and room for more.
Right handed hitter, hits from a slightly open stance with a big leg raise
load, late getting his foot down at times, upper body swing with limited lower
half shift, can use that lower half more to create timing and bat speed, has
fast hands and can turn on the ball with authority and carry when on time,
projects well as a hitter with adjustments. 6.90 runner in the sixty. Primary
middle infielder on defense, has athletic actions through the ball and moves
side to side well, plenty of raw arm strength, more carry there with more lower
half and footwork through his release, has the athleticism to stay in the
middle of the field as he matures. Also worked out in the outfield. Excellent
student.
The
defending national champions received yet another massive commitment, this time
from the 15u USA National Team MVP himself. On Saturday, 2025 infielder Coy
James announced his commitment to Ole Miss via Twitter.
"I
am excited and blessed to announce that I will be furthering my academic and
athletic career at the University of Mississippi. I want first thank my Lord
and Savior Jesus Christ for all of his blessings given to me. Next I'd like to
thank my parents for their daily sacrifices, giving me the best possible
opportunities to chase my dreams. I would also like to thank all my coaches
that have helped me and continue to help me get to this point and continuing to
invest in me. Lastly I am thankful for the coaches at Ole Miss for taking a
chance on me to be a part of their program and play at the next level. Go Rebs
#hottytoddy," James said via Twitter.
The
6-foot, 180 pound infielder from Advance, North Carolina and Davie High School
bats right-handed, throws right-handed and has an overall grade of 9 from
Perfect Game. James recorded a 6.90 second 60-yard dash and 1.65 second 10-yard
split, with a 89mph outfield velo, 87mph infield velo and 86mph exit velo.
In his
freshman season, James batted .409 in 25 games played, recording 33 runs on 36
hits, three home runs, 13 additional extra base hits and 15 RBI. Additionally,
he stole 10 bases

San Diego has drafted 12 prepsters with their last 14 first-round picks. Coy James is a solid all around player out of Davie County, North Carolina. The Ole Miss commit doesn’t rely much on power-hitting. Rather, James has an advanced approach at the plate, with good walk rates and the ability to go to all fields. James has great hands and projects as a big league shortstop. |
