CUT: C - Sean McCraw
Sean McCraw C L R 6-0 185 3-11-86
Sean McCraw attended college at San Jacinto College-North. He was first drafted in 2004 (did not sign) in the 37th round by the Milwaukee Brewers and then in 2005 in the 8th round by the Mets.
McCraw had an excellent year in 2006 with Kingsport, hitting .266/.377/.439, which included 5 HR and 25 RBIs in 32 games. OnDeck updated their ratings at the end of the Appalachian League’s 2006 season and ranked McCraw as the 13th top hitter in the league (138.71 rating) and the 31st top prospect in the league.
McCraw’s combined 4 team, 2 year minor league stats are: .246/.357/.357/.716. In February 2007, Scout.com ranked McCraw as the 25th ranked Mets prospect.
McCraw began the 2007 season in Savannah, alternating at catcher and DH with prospect Francisco Pena. He had a wonderful season for a very bad team (.272/.427/.377, 37 BBs in 151 at bats) and was promoted to St. Lucie (.261/.340/.341 in 88 at bats, only 1 error in 26 games) after the Drew Butera trade.
In September 2007, McCraw was assigned to play in the Hawaiian Winter League (which is always a sign that the organization wants to invest more time and money in you).
In November 2007, McCraw was named the Mets 19th top prospect by Scouts.com.
McCraw was born in Alvin, Texas.
A May 2008 scouting report from Andy Braunstein:
SEAN McCRAW - C - A SH'ing C with some hitting and catching potential is a reason he exploded on the scene last year after stepping out from the shadow of Francisco Pena in SAL and seizing the starting job here in the 2nd half. It was expected he will duplicate his hitting and catching feats again. He hasn't. He hasn't been hitting, and his defensive #s across the board have risen, Rs per game, successful SB attempts, # of attempts, WPs, PBs. He still has decent bat speed, 5.5-6 right, 5.5 left with 5-10 HR potential. His arm is strong and wish I could've seen him catch more but they had a kid, Ramon Castro, who was the everyday C.
McCraw started off miserably for St. Lucie (.143), but rebounded when he was sent back to Savannah (.266).
